How to change my own coolant
« on: July 27, 2017, 12:24:48 PM »

I am sure this has been discussed but I have searched and cannot find. I have 2015 twin cam twin cool and owners manual say change coolant/antifreeze every 30000 miles, I am fast approaching that. What is the easiest way to do it, short of paying dealer. Thanks

I don't have it in front of me, but it is detailed in the Service Manual.  I know I read it shortly after I bought the manual for our new 2017's.  I highly recommend always buying the Service Manual if you're going to do your own work.  There's a method in the manual to ensure that you have pumped coolant through the system and how to get the air out.  I would get the manual if I were you.

Can't say what most are using but I do recall the manual saying to use the Harley coolant and not aftermarket items. That's probably because Harley just makes a lot of money and there's is very expensive. Worth looking into.

The coolant that Mother Harley uses is GM DEXCOOL and it seems to be causing some failures with the water pumps. It seem there is a lot of gumming around the impeller after some time causing the water pump to lock up. I am changing mine tonight with ENGINE ICE. I'm heading to Sturgis next week so it will be a good test. If I have a problem I'll just have to switch back to the Harley coolant till I get back home.

Ok I just changed my coolant. The product I used is called ENGINE ICE. It is supposed to lower operating temps. The product contains propylene glycol and is phosphate free, silicate free and is biodegradable. It has surpassed ASTM D 3306 and ASTM D 4985 and meets or exceeds ASTM D 5216.

I had my water pump and antifreeze changed under warranty last August about 6K miles ago. The stuff I drained out of the bike was nasty and kinda looked like it had mud in it. I'll run this new stuff for a while then drain and take a look at it. Funny part about this is Zippers did the heads on this bike 22K ago. I know they clean everything they work on. Sooooo I'm wondering where all of this trash is coming from.

So why is Dexcool so bad in Harleys but OK in cages?  Have it in my 2006 Buick Rainier and changed it out at 100k just because.  Never ever had any problems.  So what's up with it in Harleys?

I can't answer that. I wish I knew. I know you can't run it in a Ford Diesel. I'm not going to keep running it if it is going to gum up my water pump. This Engine Ice I just put in the bike might be no good either. I guess time will tell!!!!

It's not good in cages either, my buddy owns a mechanic shop, he's shown me blocks gummed full from dexcool.  The stuff is horrible.  Green stuff is the way to go, dexcool offers no benefits over green besides more money to GM, and HD in the case of the bikes.

I hear what everyone is saying about Dexcool, but I changed the fluid in our last Escalade at 84,000 because of a hose issue. The Dexcool coolant looked exceptionally good for that mileage, I was impressed. Just saying there was nothing wrong with it. I pressure flushed it with a machine and it had no signs of sludge or crap in it at all.

Yesterday I put 300 miles on my bike after the coolant change. The bike ran well and to tell you the truth, I couldn't tell if it was running cooler or not. But I kept checking the oil pressure. I was only in ambient temps in the mid to upper 80's most of the day. I got caught in a backup on US 30 and the fans did cut in and ran for about 5 minutes. The oil pressure of the bike was 4 to 6 psi higher all day. That makes me think the engine is running some what cooler. I'm heading to Sturgis on Thursday, so that will be the real test.
