Bag Scuff
« on: February 24, 2007, 12:09:42 AM »

Hey guys, I just came up with a little simple trick to protect the bottom of bags from getting scuffed when you take them off and set them down. I put on 4 little rubber buttons on the bottom of each bag that would normally be used for cupboard door/drawer cushions. This holds the bag off the ground nicely to prevent paint damage. You can't see them on the bike. Just peel and stick
Maybe guys have been doing this already and this is old news....if not, it works slick. ;)

H4M,

You're my hero. I took your idea, and used some little clear ones I had in a drawer downstairs. Works great.

Now I can just sit the bags down, and not have to hunt for a towel or piece of carpet to put them on.

Thank you,

I fell asleep reading this last night. This is a great idea!!! Really like the idea of using clear ones. Another trip to Lowes.

Food for thought on that one guys,
I would think the bags would have to be weighted on the bottom to make sure they didn't tip over in the wind or if somebody accidentally bumped into them. I would say one of the bag stands would be a more secure method of placing your bags off the bike. I know it's more expensive to get a stand but to me if it prevents a scrape it's worth it.
I just place the bags laying down on a towel in a sliding tray that comes out over the tailgate in my Avalanche.

Fortunately that's not ever been a big issue.  Have had little rubber feet on the bottom of my saddlebags almost since the bike was new.  You can set them down and they are quite stable.

Obviously a big enough jolt would knock them over.  But their weighted such that they actually set in place real well.

A soon as I put the feet on them this morning, I immediately put them over next to tne wall on the concrete floor, not having to worry about finding a suitable soft surface.

This just takes all the hassles out of removing them for washing, working or whatever.

Really great idea.

Wonder if this would work on women?  Put a couple of little sticky pads in strategic places then just set them down and they stay in place for whatever you want to do with them  :nixweiss: ?

No screws, just little self-adhesive feet from the hardware aisle at Home Depot or Lowes.

No screws.  But they'll charge an extra $13.85 for the set with the Screamin' Eagle logo embossed in the rubber.

I'm glad to hear you guys like the idea. Its always a pain in the a$$ to find something to set the bags on when you are washing your bike...especially on a trip when your garage isn't close by. It will be interesting to see how the hold up.
If they don't seem to stay there through the elements, one could also source out a small rubber bumper that has a little rubber nipple that pulls through a small hole and anchors it....similar to what would be on a car glove box door.
Guess we will just have to see.

Like your idea but afraid you may be on to something here about their longevity.  Had a bug deflector on my previous truck and it came with several of the little self-stick buttons or whaterver you call them to keep the deflector from coming in contact with the hood.  After a few month they fell off.  Can't tell you how many times I replaced them even using silicone glue and they just would not stay on for more than a few months.  So don't get complacent and "know" you've got them installed.  Check before you set your bag down would be a good idea I think.

I've had the "loop" part of a piece of Velcro on the four corners of my bike since the night it came home.  Just clean the area off with alcohol first, and stick it on there.  No problems so far!
