Any HD 750 owners here?
« on: August 12, 2017, 07:37:13 PM »

Has anyone here added a HD 750 to their collection? My daughter who recently obtained her motorcycle license has her eye set on a HD 750. At 500 pounds I'm a little surprised it weighs that much. At about 5'2" on a good day the bike felt comfortable to her.

Before I start calling buddies to score one at a deal I figured I'd see if anyone here owns one and see what they think. She did try a Sportster low however for her it felt wide.

I haven't ever ridden one, but just sitting on one in the showroom, I felt the exact opposite of her.  the 500/750 felt really wide to me, especially with the way that they have the exhaust mounted.  sportster has always felt 'skinny' to me.  but, one thing to watch for, sportsters have their center of balance up higher, so they feel like they want to 'fall over' a lot.

I've had a conversation with my daughter about her first HD too. If she has experience with street bikes then I'd probably bow down and let her get it. First street bike? Nope. Mine's getting a $500 Yammy so she can drop and drop and drop and when that's out of her system we're not out a small HD fortune. She was not pleased about it but understood.

I tried to explain that to her.... it didn't work. her train of thought is to purchase something reliable and only purchase it once. As a Harley owner that won't happen. In a year or two she'll be looking for a bigger bike.

Nothing like setting the bar high for her!  Every first bike should be a custom one off!  Unless of course it's a 1981 Yamaha Maxim 550 like mine was.

If it's her dime you have no leverage. And yeah good point, she'll be off the 750 pretty quick. Just have her burn some 100 bills and see if she enjoys that, because that's what the 750 is gonna be. ha.

I'd ask her what her 'forever' bike would be and if it's not the 750, then there's your answer.

I bought her a new car when she started college and she is a senior this year, she still has the car and hasn't mentioned anything about a new one, yet. I could see her owning the bike several years. I think her size will limit her in her mind. I see some small people on big baggers.

Mid 70's Suzuki GT 380 for my first street bike. Started on a Yamaha YZ80.

Her dime... I'll shop it for her and probably contribute to the down payment. She is hell bent on riding the rest of this season. She has caught the bug.

I guess I will go the opposite train of thought.  My wife took the MSF in April 2007.  She loved it and wanted a bike.  Everyone said get a small used bike you do not care about.  My wife wanted a new bike, and a Harley.  So we went in the Dealership and she spent several hours deciding what she wanted.

She picked out an 883 Low.  She was very proud of the bike.  She dropped it twice at very slow almost stopped speeds.  No damage to bike but a scratched turn signal one time, and a grip and clutch the other time.  She kept it two years put 21500 miles on it and traded for a Heritage when they did a trade your sportster on a big twin and get MSRP.  She still has the heritage with 97000 miles on it.  She has also had two street glides and now two road glides.  She has dropped every bike she has owned at least once, always in gravel or grass with poor footing.  She put over 45K on both street glides and one of the road glides.

I think the Street 750 would be a better starter than the sportster

My wife went that way also, but knew she wouldn't be happy with a Sporty.  She took the MSF in 2005 and started shopping Harleys.  A month later she bought a Deluxe and put 35,000 miles on it before she traded it for a Limited.  She put 35,000 on that one and then traded it for a CVO Street Glide.  She's 5'6 and I'm glad she never bought a Sporty.  I owned a 1200 Custom as my first Harley for 6 weeks before trading it for a Heritage.  She learned from my Mi$$take.  I definitely did not get MSRP for my Sporty - Heritage trade in.
