Tach reading wrong!!
« on: February 24, 2007, 09:49:23 PM »

Has anyone else had their tach read higher than it should?? Mine would read 500-1000 rpm higher so at idle it would read 2000 rpm. Took it to the dealer and they were told tach was defective and they replaced the tach 3 times with the same problem! Either there is a production problem or they don't know what the hell is going on. Any ideas?  :nixweiss:

Haven't heard much about your tach problem on here. What bike do you have and what is the dealer saying about it? :nixweiss:

My Tach on my '07 FHRSE3 works fine most of the time. However, I've recently noticed on a couple of occassions where it is reading 500 - 1000 RPM higher than actual. In both instances, it has happened after a long (100 mile or better) ride. If I switch the bike "off" and then "on" again, it seems to reset back to the correct setting. I'm coming up on my 1K checkup and plan to have HD check it out for me.

Yes RGL, you have the same problem as me. If I ride for longer periods of time the reading will be higher like 500-1000 RPM. If you turn the ignition off, the needle sticks at the incorrect reading like 1000 RPM then back on it will reset to zero. Here is a easy test to repeat this problem. Use the speedo diagnostic mode using the following. Ignition off, press and hold the speedo reset button until the numbers and light come on, then turn the ignition on and all lights and gauges will test. Do this several times and at some point the tach will "zero" not at zero but at 500 or 1000. My bike is a FLHRSE3 bought in November. Love it as long as I don't read the tach!

I have had this same problem with my bike.  Although, I have not noticed it being better or worse depending on if I have been riding all day, or just taking it out of the garage.  Since the day I picked it up, I would notice that occasionally when you turned the ignition on, the tach needle would jump 500 rpm, when I turn the switch back to off and then back to ignition the needle will reset, or jump up to 1000 rpm.  I usually just keep turning the ignition on and off, until the tach resets.

I will also be asking my dealer about this when I take the bike in for service.  I will everyone know if I find out anything.

Later,
Ghost

Its not my tach its my speedo. If I start the bike in a different sequence the speedo reeds 20 mph at stand still if I turn off and restart it is fine. Anyone else with the problem? Billy

Hello everyone! I'm a newbie to the group but have been learning a lot of good info on this forum. I too experienced the tach problem on my 07 SERK just a couple of days ago. I also went on about a 90-100 mile trip and noticed  the tach reading about 500-1000 rpm higher. Even at a stop it read about 2500-2800 rpm. When I got home I turned the engine off and the needle read about 1500 rpm. Took about 3 times turning it on/off to reset. Called dealer and was told I needed a new tach, no questions asked. Will order and replace next week. I hope it's not an on going problem!! Will advise on status.

P.S. The dealer just installed RH T/D with SERT about two days prior to the tach problem. Any chances this may be a cause or coincidence?

I would say coincidence unless you had never had this issue before these items were installed.  My tach has done this since the day I picked it up from the dealer, bone stock.

Ok guys, the tach problem is real as I spoke to the CVO rep at bike week in daytona and they are aware of the issue. Apparently it only happens to some tachs and not others. They are looking into the reason why this is happening but for now the fix is to replace the tach/speedo. I had mine replaced 3 times with the same problem and going back for the fourth replacement. My problem happened from delivery so I doubt it has anything to do with mods. Hope this helps.

HogDoc,
You must be a very patient person. If they couldn't get it right after the first attempt I'd be pissed off! When do you say enough is enough!!! Your dealer must be providing you with complimentary accessories, right? Go get 'em!

Factory Defect!!
« Reply #13 on: March 22, 2007, 08:30:37 PM »

Okay CVO  onwers,

I got off the phone with the CVO rep that I meet at Daytona and here is the latest scoop on the tach problem. They have discovered a defect in the stepper motor of the tach and are working on a fix. It affects some but not all tachs. Currently, they are fixing the ones on the production line first and flushing the inventory of defective tachs. New replacements will be appearing in about 3-4 weeks. So if you have a defective tach they will have a real fix now!!

That's good news - so my bike (which is supposed to be being built in April) should have a complete set of working parts with no defective stuff whatsover !  ::)
