Advice for m 95"
« on: February 24, 2007, 10:16:37 PM »

I have a (still) stock 04 SED so that's 95", SE 203 (for what it's worth) cam stock ac and pipes only change is that pipes have been opened up (no baffels) It sounds F$%ing hot as hell and everybody say's looks (sounds) like you had a lot of work done. So my question is with 11,250 miles how concerned do I need to be about the cam? If I don't need to go into the case at this time to change out the cam what do you fellow riders think about my changing the pipes over to RB racing 2 into 1 and the AC change I'm thinking is Kuryakyn Pro R hyper. If this is done the local tuner say he's good with a SERT. I would go with Zippers but after some of the notes on this site I'm not sure I want their thundermax with the pipes and AC I'm looking at? So what do you think? thanks Hoody

No specific application advice.  But instead what might be a helpful suggestion.  Send a PM to Otis.  He's the king of 95" motors.

hoody,
I don't know if I would change anything at all. W/ 11k on her and running and sounding fine you may want to leave well enough alone. JMO

I know what your saying Hard, that's why I only thinking about pipes and ac at this time without going into the cams and head work. but then again bikes are made to throw money into right.

I'd do the pipes & a/c. I love my '02 Deuce. It is a blast to ride and every time I see a SED I drool!

At 11k your probably ok with the tensioners, I would definatally open it up before 20k and have a look at them. For a 95" a nice cam upgrade without head work would be the Andrews 26G, S&S 510, or the new FCC12 from Freedom cycles.

At 11,000 I'd be concerned about the cam shoes.  I built a 95" at 10,000 miles, and the inner was severely worn.  New flat top pistons, Andrews 37g, gear drive, .030 Cometic, PC3, Vance & Hines, etc. - BIG difference.  It's strong and dependable.

Oh yeah, heads were worked by SBC - sorry, I forgot.  At a roll-on at 60, it outruns a 103 with Zippers 575's.

OK HOODY here we go.

IMHO (I have a go fast 95 Dyna) I had Wes Brown at Cycle-Rama do my heads. I went with SE 10.5 to 1 pistons .005 over. In the cam cavity I have a set of S&S 640's that are gear driven with a fueling pump and lifters with a   Zippers shim. This bike has a carb and I am running a CV 51mm. The exhaust is a Thunder Header. This build on this motor spun 132H/P and 126 TQ

In this lite bike it runs real good. I also put a Baker 6 speed in the bike. There are few other things in the motor. If you want more info send me a PM. I will get you some numbers.

You mentioned you were shying away from the Thunder Max and the Auto Tune. WHY?????? If your bike is a fuelie that would be the best FI mangement you could get. You would want a 50mm throttle body with your build. Zippers also has a new dash setup where you can adjust you Thunder Max from the dash. I would look into the whole set up.

Be Safe

Thanks DC for the reply and advice sounds like you have a very strong and fast bike! with one hell of a engine build! as for your question about Zippers and the ThunderMax on my build, my concern with the zippers line is as follows;

When I walked into zippers, thinking that talking to someone in person would be the best way to get straight advice from the “experts“, the only advice I was given after fully explaining what bike/engine I have now was someone (rather leave the name out) pointing into a book and saying I “should buy the 95” kit” When I re-explained that I already have with the SE set up the 95”,mild cam,  9.4:1 pistons producing 91lb.s TQ from factory, he pointed to the Zip Kit page? When I re-explained that I wanted to increase power and TQ from what I have now, he said “you could just put a bigger cam in it” Giving up on getting advice from the “experts” about my engine upgrade I asked about the ThunderMax wanting to know if they had a base map for the ThunderMax with RB Racing 2 into 1 pipes and a Pro R hyper AC he said it does not matter what pipes you have or what AC the map they have is “close enough” (without the auto-tune) If this were the case why then would they list pipes that they are “tuned“ to? I‘m sure that Zippers spent countless hours tuning for a specific pipe and ac and just didn’t get the feeling that the “expert” I was talking too had my best interest in what he was trying to (shovel my way) sell! Lastly thinking that  living so close to them I could just drive my bike into their shop and let  them do a build for me he said we are not a shop and only sell the parts, I would need to find a shop and have them do the work. I understand that Zippers has the reputation of high end parts but the impression I left the store with was that if I want to buy a “kit” off a page from a book they have it for me. If I want to build from what I currently have now I need to find a shop that can do that on my own. If I want to use their ThunderMax on my bike I have to accept the fact that although they have expert tuners in the back setting up specific pipes to ac units creating the perfect map, It’s  “good enough” for a totally different pipe and totally different AC that I want to run with? Also after reading some of the post by others on this site with respect to what they were told and what they ended up with, and how they do not get a clear answer or timely response to problems, I think I should stay away from Zippers at least till they have a set up for what I want to build. I know this was long winded and I’m not bashing Zippers this is JMHO and the impression they left on me.

Thanks again for your answer to my question with your build up what riding conditions do you run? do you have heat build up in slow traffic? Do you run pump gas? how many miles and how long have you had this build running?

Again I don't want to start a forest fire of controversy with regards to Zippers I just thought talking to them in person would have a more informative outcome that I could rely on for my engine build. ..Hoody

Hoody

Listen to hd-dude!

If you have any questions PM him.

Like any performance work it comes down to how much horsepower are you willing to pay for.

Unfortunately many people pay twice or three times to get their final result.

hd-dude has been there, done it and done it over and over so he knows what works.

Good luck

How much horsepower and or reliability are you willing to pay for! :nixweiss:
