How Does It Handle?
« on: October 22, 2004, 06:38:06 PM »

I,m concerned about corning clearance.  How about some opinions about comfort.  I would appreciate some comments about handling.
Thanks for any posts

I think the bike handles great.  What is your concern about corner clearance.  The SEEG is lowered an inch so you'll have less clearance.  I've scraped the floorboards on my 03 Fatboy but have yet to do it on my SEEG.  Just be careful.  As for comfort, change the stock seat and you're ready to tour the country.

The weakest link in any H-D bagger's cornering prowess is the floorboards.  I scraped them on my '02 Classic and I scrape them on my SEEG, though it seems to be less often on the SEEG.  While these bikes are an inch lower than their non-CVO counterparts, the floorboards on the SEEGs are narrower and the mounting brackets are shaped differently (it was the mounting brackets that I ground down on the '02) which both work to make up for the lowering when it comes to maximum lean angle.  As far as handling, I think the lowered shocks make for a much better-handling bike vs. a stock FLHT because the center of gravity is lower, plus the stiffer ride serves up more confidence in turns as well as on the high-speed straights, IMHO.

Regarding comfort, the two biggies have already been mentioned: windshield and seat (and in that order).  For windshields, I have the 9 1/2 inch lightly smoked H-D piece which I think is perfect because it still keeps the bike looking low, but offers excellent wind protection.  I liked the stock SEEG seat just fine, myself but had to switch to something my wife could be happy with, so I went with the Road King Comfort Stitch seat and have no regrets.

The bike is a good performer handling fairly well for a bike its size.  I have installed the floor board spreaders as well and scrap the floor boards when I ride aggressive in the corners.  They are replacable so I don't worry to much about it.

THEY WOULD TAKE AWAY FROM CORNING CLEARENCE.

I too took off the stock rear shocks because the ride was terrible compared to my 2002 Ultra. I found a set of stock take offs from a friend and bought them for $50. Put them on and now I think the ride is good. Raised the back up an inch so I gained a little clearance. I too seem to drag the boards when the wife isn't riding along. She tends to get upset at the noise it makes while scraping the ground.

Yes the ground clearance is a problem with these bikes, I constantly drag the floorboards however the handling is still excellent ( I do love the lowered look)  and the rear air shocks must be replaced they bottom out terribly!!!

With you on the Jiffy Stand Gettinold!  My right floorboard has a new "bevel", but the Jiffy definately has a new contour.  I suspect both of the changes are a result of my refusal to age in a respectful manner.   [smiley=bigok.gif]
