Hydraulic Clutch For The HD 6-Speed
« on: October 22, 2004, 08:11:37 PM »

I just saw a new parts and accessories supplement at Reno HD. The long-awaited hydraulic unit for the HD 6 speed is front and center. Also in the catalog was a heated touring seat with optional handlebar mount controller. [smiley=laugh.gif] [smiley=laugh.gif] [smiley=laugh.gif]

OK, now I'm changing my vote from "no" to "yes" on the "Speculation" poll/thread.

Thanks for the heads-up on this, PCC!

Good news PCC. If any of you find this on the HD website I would be much obliged if you could post the link as 6 speed is on my shopping list.

Thanks in anticipation, Tony.

Just learned from my friend at the local shop that the new adapted HD 6 speed is in and looking for a home on my scoot Monday.  Will post the results and the amount of labor to install.

Hey 103....had to put the install off until this coming Monday as I got called out of town to work.  Hated to put it off, but got to keep the ol' cash rolling to play with my toys.  Will post as soon as we get rolling.  (I'm off most of the week next week so should be able to post a good evaluation.)

For what it is worth, I rode a ST Std today with 95" kit, and a six speed HD trans. Below 70 mph it is useless. The bike feels unhappy, you want to downshift all the time, even at 55 - 65 mph unless it is level and smooth. Once above 70 it was O.K. in 6th until you wanted to pass something or go up a large hill, then you once again wanted to downshift. The bike I rode is not a screamer, but it has as much power as my SEEG. Appears to me that you would need a LOT of interstate above 70 MPH to ever feel like the money was well spent. Just my 2 cents. But I had figured on buying one, now I won't, saved me several dollars.

I don't know if the HD 6-speed has a higher 1st gear ratio, like Baker's does. If so, you can change the primary and compensating sprockets to a 24/37 and get 3% more torque and horsepower and the revs will drop in sixth but not as much. This makes the whole thing work.
Even though my bike has some motor work done, the effect is to make it feel quicker and lighter, like a softail or dyna. I've been pleased with my Baker set up. I have no such issues as did the bike that J. Rud rode. [smiley=7.gif]

The Harley 6-speed is a Jims unit. All gearing is the same as a 5 speed except for 6th which is a 2.85 (or 2.86), 5th is a 3.15. The Baker unit is a direct drive 6th, so the lower gears are a lower ratio (higher numerically) which makes for quicker acceleration. On a Baker unit you change the engine sprocket to obtain a lower overall ratio. Several advantages, the biggest being less noise and vibration and smoother power when in 6th as it is direct vs overdriven. So the engine does not have to work as hard. The Harley unit makes a lot of noise, even over loud pipes. The Baker unit I have not riden, but do know a guy who has one and he says it is as quite as his 5-speed. Comparing a Baker Direct 6 and a Jims O/D 6 is apples and oranges.

So you are saying the HD 6 speed is very noisy?  Have you had it looked at to see why have a buddy that said his is as quiet as a std tranny and shifts smoother.
