At $15.50/hr they better give employees a big discount if they want to sell them Harleys.

This can’t be true...my dealer told me that HD is cutting production due to lackluster sales.  So they’re cutting production but hiring new employees? Hmmm, maybe the salesman was just trying to sell me that RGS with the old “if you want it you better buy it now because we don’t when or if we’ll get another one” tactic!

The link wasn't very detailed - but reading between the lines I gathered they are filling vacancies with temporary workers, at reduced wages/benefits, rather than hiring fulltime workers at higher wages/full benefits.

Possibly this is a ploy to lure $15/hour Starbucks barristas away to work for HD on the top secret Caramel Machiatto Road Glide & Double Skinny Tall Latte Fatboys for the rumored 2019 HD Starbucks themed bikes?  :nixweiss:

This is just a continuation of the cost cutting introduced under the previous management, whereby full time workers with decent pay and benefits are replaced by temporary part time workers with low pay and no benefits.  It's unfortunate they don't use the same approach at the executive level, where they could save a real pile of cash.

I agree Jerry.

And watch where the quality goes over the next few years.

At $15.50/hr they are not going to be potential customers.....

What to build HD motorcycles?

Link is broken

Here's another one
http://www.tmj4.com/news/local-news/harley-davidson-is-looking-to-hire-temporary-positions

No word on how many. I wonder if the employees laid off earlier were permanent or temp workers?  The article doesn't address that. When we took the Steel Toe tour at York a few years back, they told us then that they had temp workers in there building bikes. $15.50 isn't bad money for an area as poor as what Milwaukee is. Temp position or not, it's still money in the wallet.

Did I see a while back they laid off a bunch? This must be the low cost replacements.

It's how they keep overhead down. The people they laid off were making close to $30 an hour. They hire temps from a temp agency and after the 120 days or whatever it is they let them go and bring in a new batch. I have family that live in tomahawk and the Harley plants up there started using that tactic about 5 years ago. Hard to keep up on quality if you get new people every three to four months.

Agreed. Corporations will do anything within the law to maximize profits for their shareholders. That's why I don't have confidence that the proposed tax bill coming out of Congress will result in more or higher paying jobs for Americans.
