Gordito since I have both, I would prefer to have the gears from the Baker in the Harley they mesh nicer than the harley does.   However the Baker has had to be rebuilt now 3 times.   It has been good since Baker rebuilt it the last time, but it only has about 1000 miles on it since then.   The countershaft had to be replaced the last time.   At higher speeds it does not like to go into 6th gear under heavy RPM's.   I have not had this issue with the Harley Transmission.

I don't think its really worth the money to pay for the Baker based on the support I have gotten from them or the quality of the product thus far.   I think you could live with the Harley and if you didn't know how nicely the gears meshed together 1 through 5 on the baker you would never miss it.

I also forgot to mention that I hate the fact that on the Baker there is no down shift stop when you are actually in 1st gear.   You can continue to press down on the shifter and have to rely on knowing what gear your actually in.   It can be a real nuisance.

You guys have to be loaded with cash!  There is no way I could spend $30,000+ on a bike and then spend $3000.00 on a new tranny.  Do really think it's worth it?  I toyed around with the idea on my stock Ultra last year but decided the return would not be worth it.  Then I bought the SE and case closed.

I have the DD-6 in my 04SEEG. Let's look at it this way, if you wan't to save money on fuel then you will never come close to having the new trans paying for itself.
Is the reason you want to change so you won't feel like the motor is overworking itself. Never happen The twin cam motor is not designed to run effeciently under 2400 rpm's. Lugging these motors is more harmful than running them at a high rpm for extended periods of time. ie 2000rpm-bad      3500rpm better than 2000.
Don't want to talk you out of spending your money, but I wouldn't do it again.

$3000.00 on a new tranny.

Never would've spent that much on one either.  Certainly not worth it (to me).  I got my gear set for $1250.00.  If I remember correctly the side cover was a cheap eBay score.  Pretty sure had about $1500.00 in the whole tranny job.  Even that was more than it seemed prudent spending for the limited gain.  It did turn out to be nice to ride with on the long days though.

B...thanks for that bit of feedback.  You described what I am "feeling" with my bike...it really LIKES to run above 2500 and just seems to be in it's "sweet spot" from there to 4K, so that's where I run the vast majority of the time.  I thought it was just me from hearing all the guys around here chugging along (not here on the forum, but here around town).

Not just you TC.  Lots of (too many) riders out there putting these things around lugging the engine and, apparently, not even realizing they're doing it.  Maybe they need a more finely tuned ass to feel what's going on  :nixweiss:  ?

Glad to know that I am not the only one. Thought I was a little crazy because I never want to use 6th gear unless I hit an interstate at 75 plus. When I am in 5th at about 70 at around 3000-3200 rpm and shift to 6th it sounds and feels horrible to me (dropping the rpms to about 2100-2200). It has this reverb in my ears or something and feels like it has no power. I like to keep it in 5th gear I was just worried I may be doing some damage to something by doing so.

They need a Cobin seat Don, so they're not so isolated from the motorcycle they can't feel what's going on .

Hadn't thought about that as a pitch for them Brian.  Something like: "... and last of all, Corbin seats are so firm they make you as one with your motorcycle; so you can feel every damn little thing going down the road."

Then again maybe I shouldn't write their ad copy.....  :nixweiss:

if you do go with a 6 speed, it would be a perfect time to change your gearing to 3:37. You get a new rocket ship with that combo............. :bananarock:

BTW a HIGHER UP in the industry said the reason for gearing change in 03 was to please EPA on sound.......running taller gears = lower rpm = lower noise. He said one of the best improvement would be to change gearing back to 3:37.

Sounds about right....

I believe that Jim's supplies H-D with trannies, but I could be wrong.

B B

It is my understanding that the P&A 6 speed is sourced through Jim’s and their OEM BT and XL components are done in house.
