Matching factory paint
« on: February 28, 2007, 05:14:10 PM »

I have yet to do the research so maybe someone here already knows. I wonder if anyone has found a painter who can match the metal grind paint scheme on our CVO's. I know that I can order a replacement part from York Pa but that would only be a factory replacement part. I have also seen Corbins version of the paint and it's not even close. I have an idea for my bike. The idea actually began when I decided to trade my beloved Heritage Softail for my CVO. There were alot of things I wanted that the CVO offered for alot less than upgrading my Heritage. So now I want to begin to transform my CVO into the Heritage Classic I always dreamed of owning before I owned the one I had. So to begin my mods toward transformation I am going to start by bringing the bike up to stock (non cvo) ride height. After I do that I want to replace the front fender with a Heritage Classic front fender but painted to match the current scheme. SO I need to find a painter that can replicate it as close as possible so that it looks like a factory Heritage CVO. I then plan to change the bars add the passing lamps and so on. I am also going to find some fat spoke unidirectional laced wheels, eventually turning my fatboy to a CVO Heritage Classic that can be stripped back down to the Fatboy it is now when the mood strikes.

Any help would be appreciated.

Some of the reasons for the changes include:

My wife hates the ride quality of the fatboy compared to our old ( also a 2005 ) Heritage.
I keep scraping in corners.
No wind protection.
No place to store anything beyond a pack of smokes.

We really want to start putting in alot of two up miles on the bike like we did when we had our Heritage and miss the classic looks as well. That's not to say the Fatboy looks bad at all. We are also tired of parking next to bikes that look just like ours. We would have the only CVO Heritage Softail ever made.

Everyone has their own idea of what their dream bike might be. Mine has always been a tricked out Heritage Softail Classic that I can strip down for solo flights to the local bike meets etc and also pack her up to go across country two up.

Scott, I have been battling with this problem for some time now, even though I have found someone who thinks he can match the paint, the metal grind effect would still be air brushed on & I'm not sure hw that would look.
So now after a recent experiement I am leaning heavily towards full chrome replacement tins. I have already done a front fender & have my wide rear fender to do but am just a bit stumped about chroming a gas tank as they have a tank liner which can not be removed. I have no idea what will happen to this liner during the electroplating process even though I can eaisly fit a new tank liner.

Cheers

I would think that the only way to truly match the metal grind is to do just that.  Grind (slightly) the area that you want the effect paint and clearcoat.  Most painters that also do body work could achieve this look with their disk sander and a heavy sanding disk.  I can get info of a painter in Phoenix area that I'm sure could achieve this finish.  Cost is another issue though 8)

Yeow!! Aussie, how do you find the time to do all of these amazing changes? Sometimes I envy your setup. Other times, I couldn't bear the variety of pipes, fenders, lighting...My Friend, you amaze me constantly.

I am a painter and I've been working on this for a few months now. Getting the grind effect is not the problem, getting clear to stick to metal is. Clearcoat is not designed to adhere to bare metal. I believe i'll have this solved shortly, I just need to find time to work on it again. (busy season) Of course these custom tricks have to be figured out, nobody wants to give up their secrets. When I feel I have it perfected, I'll make sure to post here so you can check it out. Back to the R&D

Your work looks great, I look forward to the results of your R & D. You may be the first one to match this finish! I'm surprised about the fact you can not get clear to stick to bare metal, I thought that would be the easy part not the actual  grinding.

Cheers

Hey, good to see you as well.

I had to spend alot of time on the GL1800 forum trying to figure out all the junk concerning Honda ownership. It was fun for a time, went through a GL1800 and a VFR 800 and back to focusing on this bike.........only one I own now. My wife has actually switched brands for ergonomic reasons. She misses alot of things about owning a Harley of her own but she really likes cruising on her Yamaha V-star 1100 custom. It just fits her riding style and ergos, she is only 5 foot and 130 lbs of so of little redhead. She did great with her Harleys but she is getting a bit older and wanting something just a bit easier to ride.......she had a sporty and she had a pretty kick butt dyna for awhile. The thing she misses the most is the sound.

her old bike.

HERE YOU GO:  CUSTOM PAINTED VEHICLES IN FRANKSVILLE, WI.  TALK TO DONNA @ 262-835-0035.  THEY DID MY O6 FB REAR FENDER AND THE PAINT MATCH & GRIND & STRIPING WAS 110%.  IT'S VERY COSTLY AND YOU WILL HAVE TO SEND THEM YOUR FRONT FENDER FOR A MATCH.
