It looks to me that  the ole gravity supply method allowed for the reserve feature with a petcock tha had 2 different hight's  cant be incorporaed into the electric pump system  having one pick up source.   I would think  the HK guys would sleep over the Delphi  guys fish camp sometimes and come up with a "Fuel is Low" verbal warning thru the upcoming plazma screen/heads up display sysem?? :nixweiss:

I agree, there is no way to easily retrofit a reserve into the current system, but the problem is a single pickup point for the pump. Dual pickups, and an acompanying valve, turns the single pickup system into a reserve system. A self priming pump would get past any priming problems if a gravity feed couldn't be used.

It's not rocket science to me. Maybe I'm missing something. Maybe there is a real good reason it hasn't already been done.

I could only imagine $$$$  is the real reason but as long as they dont take notes from the old FoMoCo  method and thier dual tank switching method!! I'd rather run out of fuel due to my ignorance then some unreliable elctronic reserve gimick. I found looking at the fuel guage once in a while has kept me from running out  pretty accuratly. A NOS tank might also serve a a spare blast of reserve for those times ya gotta get there fast :nixweiss: :huepfenlol2:

I ran my tank almost dry when I changed my fuel lines last week. The gauge had one LED lit. I was five blocks from a gas station. The gas lite came on about 20 miles previous. When I left the shop to get gas, one lite was still lit. I ran out of gas 1-1/2 blocks from the gas station. To me, the low-fuel warning lite was very accurate, but everyone should know that on the LED gas gauge, don't wait until there's no lites. But between the warning lite and the gauge, there's adequate warning to me. Using the warning lite as the reserve lever, serves the same function of getting you to a gas station. I wouldn't push it for more than that! My $.02. Hoist! 8)

I think the problem here is that the little light doesn't always get your attention right when it comes on. Knowing how far you can go after it is on is good. Knowing how far you can go, and knowing when it comes on is priceless.

I don't know about everyone else, but when I hit reserve on the carb'd bike, I always knew it.

Yeah Chuck, but doesn't it relate to your gauge as well? Between the mileage since your last stop, the lite and the gauge, you should have an adequate understanding of how much fuel is left. Except for my FL's. I never had a gauge. I use Pingle petcocks, so you can't count on a proper reserve amount with them. You're supposed to have a gallon reserve with the HD petcocks. No 2 were the same and on one of my FL's, I ran out of gas after 12 miles on reserve. Nothing's more accurate than knowing your bike and it's limits! ;) Hoist! 8)

I agree 1,000% about knowing how big that tank is, and knowing how far you can go. But.... since conditoins change, wind, grade, elevation, speed etc., mileage changes, sometimes drastically. Knowing when that little light comes on, or when you hit reserve will let you know how well you're doing against your benchmark.

Quick example. I knew reserve was at 4.5 gal on the '99. I knew I had 1 gal reserve. If I hit reserve at 180, that meant 40 mpg. Any change in that meant I had to change stops. I routinely rode to less than 1/2 gal which was 200 mi.

Crossing Wisconsin Eastbound on I-90 with the standard 30 knot crosswind, if I hit reserve at 160, that meant mileage had dropped to about 36 mpg, which would put me on the side of the road at the 200 mark. Knowing exactly when you hit that mark, is crucial. I'll see how I adjust to a light instead of a reserve. It's not like I have a choice.

I admit, most people have a different meaning of riding tank-to-tank than I do. I like to stretch it. That's part of the fun for me. I haven't been stranded yet, but I've been REALLY close.

Notice it's on?  How the hell do you ever notice it's on when some hare brain hid it behind the speedo needle's tail?

Yep, that's the bit that annoys me too!  :-\

Yeah, but if you're paying attention to the odometer, and your gas gauge, you can look for the lite too. Between these 3 things, you should be able to adjust your decision on when to stop. Don't rely on just one. I try not to push to squeeze every drop of fuel between fuelings. Sometimes, on the road, it's based on where the next gas station might be. Hoist! 8)

Well I can understand why. You're doing so much work on the bike, you probably so broke, you can't afford to pay attention! ;D Hoist!

Thats the whole point. We are NOT paying attention and want something to DRAW our attention to how far we have gone so far on a full tank and based on that I'll know how far I got left. I always use my A&B trip buttons in conjunction with the fuel light. I reset the A button after fill up (I even do it exactly the same way each time as a little more or less fuel can drastically effect my mileage calculations as well) and I press the reset buttom on B when the light comes on (or when I notice it anyway as it is HARD TO FRIGGIN SEE :)) then I know how far I can push it to stop for the next fill up as I too like to push it a little........... :drink:

Exactly.........maybe we could wire a buzzer to the lite and it would alert us to look for the light whic we couldn't see so we'd cancel the buzzer and still be walking to the station.

Or to be more like a reserve, wire it into the ECM so it cuts fuel. Then it would function just like the tried and true reserve. Toggle the run switch and off you go.

How many lawsuits would come out of that design?

Yeah that's it! Wire it into the Nolan and have it send an electric shock into the helmet to alert you. And in case you're not paying attention, it will get more frequent as you get closer to running out. The final blow is full electrocution if you run out of gas!

OK, OK, I'm not funny and certainly not much help. Moving on to my next victim now! ;D Hoist! 8)
