Voltmeter fluctuating
« on: April 25, 2018, 05:29:50 PM »

2015 CVO Street glide voltmeter dancing between 12-14 volts when revving engine. Started at last year MITM.. put a voltmeter on the battery tender leads and it is stable at 14.2--even while I am watching the gauge dance. Already replaced the gauge...same thing. Anybody know if this is BCM controlled?? I am about the check all the grounds, but everything else is working fine.

Any ideas??

mine (16 RGU) did this, when I ran it with the bags off and didn't have the bag lights or locks plugged in...thinking it had something to do with the splitter for the bag lights? so check lights make sure all is working and plugged in. hope that helps  :nixweiss:

Mike, a bad ground anywhere can cause unexpected things in systems as interconnected as these.  Then, sometimes, there are things that defy my limited understanding.  For one such that has apparently caused an issue similar to yours more than once check out the thread linked below.  Thought of it when reading your post.

A bad wheel bearing????  That's wild......unfortunately, this also happens when the bike is not moving....and the when I connect a voltmeter to the battery it stays steady while the gauge dances.......

I thought of a bad connection at the battery (which I still need to check) but that should also show up when connecting a voltmeter to the battery tender lead--which it does not.

I need start checking all the grounds.

A bad voltage regulator caused the voltmeter to read erratically on my 2007.  Would check all electrical connections first.

I was thinking that......but the external voltmeter is rock solid at 14.2 so I figured it was good  :nixweiss:

Get to the wiring on the back of the gauge and test it there. After you tighten up those battery connections. >:(  :drink:

I'd missed that was happening while standing still.  If a meter at the battery is showing a solid 13.8-14.2 while the dash instrument is dancing that makes it both weirder and, hopefully, a little easier to isolate.  Normal suspect would be the regulator but the meter isn't dancing.  So you have to assume the regulator is ok.  When checking grounds you've got to get deep in the weeds.  A few times I've found some poorly made Harley battery cables.  Looked fine on a visual inspection but had poor crimps making the issue actually within the cable ends.

I anticipate that the MoCo will, in the future, remove the voltage gauge and replace with a note on the BOOM stating Voltage "Yes" like they do with the oil pressure now ("OK")....sorry, just a random thought reading this thread.

My '12 did the gauge dance but that was due to the poor voltage regulators (and recalled).  Replaced the regulator through the recall and no more dancing.  I was having other issues (lights fluctuating) besides the gauge.  You didn't mention it but are you having other signs of voltage issues?  Light intensity (fluctuate with RPM), radio giving issues, hard to start?  All good signs (among others) of a poorly operating voltage regulator....

You also mention it's steady at the battery at idle or while sitting.  Have you put that voltage meter on it and monitored it while riding?  Just thinking out loud....again.

As OBB stated, I'd start with voltage readings at the gauge.

Checked the battery connections and everything is good....so I got out the wiring diragram. Its hard to see in the pic, but the voltmeter is at the top and it has 3 wires. Battery fuse, ground and HD Link output. Anybody got any idea what HD link is?

Probably going to the canbus system in which case you may not be able to pull a voltage reading.

That is what I was thinking.

I believe that HD-Link circuit connects the fuel gauge and the volt meter to a separate control module for the instruments (not certain since I don't have late model manuals).  If you have the Electrical and Diagnostic manual, see if you can find such a module.  It might be a separate small box or it could be built in to the instrument cluster as it is in many cars.  Just throwing out an idea, for what it's worth (or not).
