HELP! SERK Needs Different Handlebars
« on: March 03, 2007, 06:54:53 PM »

OK, I put a bunch of miles on the new SERK today. On my previous RK's, I always used HD Chrome Dyna Wide Glide handlebars. My '85 Wide glide has 6" risers with Flanders Street Bars. I'm used to riding with my arms a little higher than these SERK bars (not too high), and slightly narrower. Elbows out a little and fists just below shoulder level. So I might be thinking of changing the stock handlebars. Lots of folks here are talking about Wild One Chubbys. I checked their site and found two that might work. 10" Apes P/N WO515 and the 8-1/2" Apes P/N WO513. First, with either of these, what needs to be changed to do this? Or can cables, wires and lines be stretched? How about both hydraulic master cylinders, switch housings, etc.? Any special problems or issues to be aware of? I also want to maintain the internal wiring feature. Second, does anyone recommend any other bars suited for the riding position I described? Or just some other awesome bar they've used.

I'd appreciate any help or feed back you guys can provide. TIA! Hoist!

I really like the look of the wider Chubby bars from Wild One.  Really a sweet product.  But don't forget to at least look at Flanders.  They've been around forever (even though you never seem to hear much about them anymore).  Had a set of Flanders bars two Road Kings ago that sound at least similar to what you're describing and they were great bars.  Comfortable fit and quality parts.

Have you tried HD part number 56916-07 with 55854-07 ,  the cheapest way (less than $100 online) to use the stock 1.25" bars, and make them 3" higher and 1" back with the rise back?  Just a thought as I am thinking the same.

Hoist, if you go with thick (1.5") bars, make sure they have clearance for your hydraulic clutch master cylinder.....
Don't ask me how I know this.  >:(

I've always liked Flanders and have them on my street bike. They have a nice pair of Mini-Apes (A2), P/N 650-28095. Bars are only 1". With the Wild Ones or the Flanders, what about the Clutch Master Cyl? Also, how high can you go on this bike without changing the cables and lines? Are there any 1-1/4 inch Mini Apes out there? Kinda like the look of the fat bars. Thanks, Hoist!

The latest Wild 1 Chubby's taper down to 1" vice the flat spots they used to have. Smart idea since they can fab a one size fits all bar instead of having to have right side flat spot and both sides flat spot. I've got 12" Chubby's with the flat spot on Elvis and 10" tapered on LD. The newer style looks better IMHO. In any event, so long as you go with Wild 1 Chubby's you'll be ok. Flanders makes nice bars, I've used their flat track style bars with 9" risers for years on custom FXRs, but couldn't tell you anything about their apes.

B B

PS
When Beags and I did Elvis, I bought what I figured I needed. Did about 3 trips back and forth for hoses, fittings etc. When we did LD, I PM'd HD_Dude (Jim) and told him how much higher than stock I wanted to be. He shipped me everything I needed and it all went together as planned ( He also gave me a respectable discount) NO , this is not a commercial, it's advice on how to change your bars hassle free.

Hey B B, thanks for the info. That's the stuff I need to know. Your 10" is that WO515? Do you have to replace all cables and lines? I'm not crazy about that hole-in-the-riser cover w/fat 3-1/2" risers look that HD offers. I guess that's an option if that set-up can use all the original cables and lines. Anyway would you have anymore details on the Wild 1 10" install or would know if the 8-1/2" ones can use the existing cables and lines? I think the Flanders only come in 1" dia, so it looks like Wild 1 is the only option for 1-1/4" dia for a mini-ape. Thanks again! Hoist! 8)

Howie, in case he misses this thread you should PM Naitram.  He did the bars on his Road King 18 months or so ago so might have good ideas on what lengths survive and what don't.

been about 2 years now, i did Flanders 10" mini apes, they are a 1" bar i cant speak to the hydraulic clutch since 02 was still mechanical.

i was able to reuse all of my original wiring and cables ( i did reroute some of them a bit ), i chose to drop to 1" bars so that i could use H-D acc. switch housings. i modified them to run the wires through the bars as well ( worked great till a genius at the dealer pinched the wires ).

pics of the project can be seen in my gallery

http://www.cvoharley.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=19214

these bars fit me very well, i did have to clock them back a bit when i added the D-fly fairing

i have the WO517's on my SERK. :2vrolijk_21: i'm 6' 200lbs.
measurements are 10"base, 8.5" rise, tip to tip 31", and 14.25" pull back.

i had to replace the brake line and in turn lost the chrome cover at the junction. i did put a chrome fork baffle on.

Ride Safe

TN

Thanks TN. I checked them out. Those are Road Glide bars and pull back a little too much for me. But the specs say it will work with stock cables and lines. Why did you have to change the brake line? What about the clutch line? I'm looking at the 8-1/2" rise, 35" width, 10" base, and 11.5" pullback. I was hoping this would work with the stock cables and lines. I'm real curious why you had to change yours, when they say you don't need to. Hoist! 8)

Neal, were those the A2's with 10" pullback, 34-1/4 width? They come pre-drilled for wiring too. I was hoping to stay with the 1-1/4" without any cable or line changes. Thanks a lot. Hoist! 8)

Hoist, Just call wild ones. They are a big help. All the bars  need a new clamp since the HD bars are 1  1/4 allthe way thru. they all except the hydraulic clutch. i tried the 515's. They didn't bring the bars back very much. i am haven't custom bars made now. we started with the Heritage softail bars and made the rise 2 inches higher and we are trying to bend the bars in 1 1/2 inch pipe , I will find out tomorrow if they could make the bends in 1 1/2 or if we had to use 1 1/4. heritage bars are what the police RK's use. very comfortable and adjustable. i will probably need all new cables.  I'll try to send pics with the new bars before we send them out to be chromed  Billy

Hey Billy that's great info. Sounds like you like a similar riding position to mine. Let me know how those custom bars go. I prefer the 1.25, but would love to see what you do. Maybe another pair can be made? ;) Hoist! 8)
