You let her see the better looking oens?  Oh man......   You poor bastard!

On mine the spots fit fine.  With the single bulb headlight that ring snugged up very well too.  With the dual bulb housing I've never been able to get it closer than about 1/4" though.  I'll beat it on again before spring starts and maintenance stops.  But it's just never been perfect.

I must have been holding my mouth right when I put mine on, as I had little difficulty.  The headlight ring has a gap at the bottom about the size you could slip a piece of gift box cardboard in, if that much.  I guess even a blind hog can find an acorn every once in a while...

Yeah, really, bottom-line is they're not all that difficult. And someone to hold the ring and thump, would'a made it even easier.
Funny how the non-visored ones looked really cool.... until she saw the visored. Just a little lip on the top, and "gotta have those."  It's all good... I'd put visors on my own eyes if she wanted me to. :-*

I posted this a year ago on another thread. Put the trim ring on the headlight WITHOUT the stock one under it. What you do is leave the headlight bucket just a little bit lose and then tuck the visor in behind it. Put a small washer on either side of the nut at the bottom. It's a one person job with no hassle at all. I mounted one on Elvis in this fashion about 16,000 miles and it hasn't come loose, or even rattled. Honestly, I don't know why you guys believe just because it says something in the tech sheet that comes with the part, that it's gospel. Me and Beags concluded a Long Long time ago, that the H-D Tech Writers are sadisctic evil people.

Brian, I tried mounting it solo.  Even tried it with a couple of different insulators thrown in.  With the original single bulb housing that was my solution.  But with the dual bulb housing the damn thing just wouldn't mount successfully that way.  The mount plate/ring/thing is significantly different from the predecessor part.  Just won't play that way.

The problem I had with the original style trim ring on the '05 single bulb, and on the '07 dual bulb, is a HUGE gap, not at the bottom, but all the way around the trim ring, where it is supposed to sit on the lens. It worked fine on the original '99 ugly headlight, but when I upgraded to the '05 cloisonne headlight, it has this huge gap. It's like the trim ring needs to get pushed back 1/4" - 3/8" further onto the headlight to get closer to the lens.

I'm hoping the trim rings were redesigned for the new thinner headlights, but the description still says they fit all the old stuff too.

Do yours all fit nice and tight up against the headlight?

Mine fits flush back there ok.  My issue is only the gap at the bottom.  Sounds almost as if there's a fair bit of variation in production?

They must have changed the rings because I can almost get the tip of my pinkie, my littlest finger, not my wife, between the lens and the trim ring, and the rear of the trim ring is between the OEM trim ring and the fairing.

That much variation from part to part and install to install really (obviously) shouldn't be the case.  Makes these rings sound too much like the oil temp gauges and their several variations all under the same part number.

Have never noticed one fitting poorly in the area yours is.  Have seen a few with the gaps at the bottom.  But yours may be a one-off.  So, what's it like being unique?

Checked mine when I walked by it this AM on the way out...it has a small gap like Chief is talking about...maybe 1/8", but it's really not noticeable unless you're looking for it.  It seems I do remember having to push back on it while tightening the bolt on the bottom....at any rate, it looks good enough that I can live with it...better than without the thing on there. I think those pieces make the bike look lower and longer from a side view, which is the "look" I'm after with my color scheme and lines...

Here's a shot of the gap between the lens and the plain trim rings on the '07 dual bubl headlamp. These trim rings used to fit flush with the OEM headlamp on the '99, so they are OK, at least with the old ugle light.

Mines has about that much gap in it also. I've changed my light to the ones that came stock on the '05's (Halogen Headlamp - Clear Smooth Lens P/N 68342-05).

Thanks d00d. Sure would be nice if they would make a new trim ring to fit the new headlamps as nicely as it fit the pre '05's.
