Radio replacement
« on: July 24, 2018, 08:01:57 PM »

I have a 05 CVO Electra glide and I would like to upgrade the radio. Looking for suggestions for something hopefully plug n play that my handlebar switches work with. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Almost....

It will bolt right in.  The 05 SEEG uses the radio from the P&A catalog with the extra amp built in.  So it'll have not just the normal "big plug" on the back of the radio (left side of the radio as you're facing the radio's ass end) but the accessory overlay harness that powers the amplifier AND provide amplified output to the speakers.  That harness is in the other big plug on the back of the radio that does not exist on the "stock" radios and does not exist on the aftermarket radios; Aquatic included.

This isn't a big deal.  You can simply not use the overlay harness and leave it dangling inside the fairing.  What you've have to do, however, is stop using the speaker wires that will currently be in use on the bike.  Those wires are part of that accessory harness.  The speaker wires that are part of the stock harness are inside the fairing also.  You'll find them up close to each speaker.  Those are the speaker wires that are powered by the one big plug that fits the Aquatic radio and most other radios that are "direct fit."

Oh yeah, there are also adapter kits that will let you use Sony or most other head units.  Even marine grade head units have a spotty record living a long time in the bike fairing though.  Yet another option is getting the Harman Kardon radio from an 06 and newer bike.  Harley will tell you they won't work.  They won't work when new as the radio needs to be programmed to a bike.  Find a good used one on eBay that's already been programmed for a bike and it'll be a direct bolt in though.

The only thing that won't work is the AVC function.  It can be made to work though.  AVC was never that big a deal to me but it can be made to work with some rewiring (the hard way) or a place called Iron Cross can update the software in the radio to make it work directly.

Handlebar controls will work with almost any headunit but you have to buy a module...I used a Scoshe(sp?) brand steering wheel module, got it pretty cheap off eBay.  Works great and ALL the handlebar controls function properly.  Good luck with whatever you decide!

Also you’ll need to invest in a $20 splashguard to keep the water off the face of the head unit, biketronics makes some nice ones just pay attention when ordering to make sure you get the right one b/c they vary depending on whether you have the chrome bezel on your inner fairing or not.

....and if you’re like the rest of us around here, a new headunit, amp and fairing speakers will make you happy (for a while) but eventually you’ll want to add more:

Take a look on Crutchfeld.com. They have a variety of radios listed by bike model and also have the module for the bar controls.
That Aquatic is really nice but, they are sure proud of their product.
