Whenever you adjust the shock preload you need to check the height adj rod and lock nut.

It is possible that while you are reducing the preload you will also lengthen the shock.

$250 for rebuild

They recommend shocks to be rebuild at 20k miles. Since I had 16k mile on the shocks, I went that route which included the adj rod repair. Don’t know what their normal rebuild price is.

While detailing. The other shock was ok.

The rod is not bent, the receiver that it screws into was stripped.

I don't recall the rep mentioning any rebuild mileage.  Have had mine on for 60,000 miles in the past 2 years and they still ride well.

In fact while in Sturgis this year I had them check my adjustments to ensure the were set properly.  I did ask if they started riding bad what needs to be done.  They mentioned to write them and schedule a rebuild either by coming by the shop in NC or shipping them.  Nothing was said about a mileage.  They said mine were doing fine.

This is the second time I have heard about the rebuild suggestion @ 20K. In this day and age with the quality of seals coupled with the sealed nitrogen over oil system this seems crazy to me.

No kidding. There's an Ohlins dealer local to me. I will ride up there next spring and have them let me know what they think of mine. $250 on special

HD159 Shock.

Can you explain this a little. I run the 159's and don't want to see the same issue. I only used the length adjustment when I initially installed the shocks to make both shocks match the unloaded swing arm. Once that was set I have not touched that adjustment again and am using 3 different preload/sag adjustments for solo, 2up, and 2up with trailer. What am I missing?

I called them and they said rebuild rears at 30K, service front cartridges at 20K

When I bought mine I was told 25K miles to 30K miles for a rebuild.  Had mine rebuilt while in Daytona two year later with just over 25K on them.
