Well since I spent the $4 on the screws, I figured I should use them before I lose them. Since CRS kicked in, that's a real possibility! Like I said, since the job's a PIA, I've always had that done in my friends shop. I think I'll do the same with this. When I bring it in to him at 500 mi for service, I'll probably get that crappy stock oil out of there and put in the 15W PJ1 and chrome screws, and be done with it! Thanks for your help and wake-up call on this. You just saved me a face full of oil. Not that I've never had facefulls of worse stuff! ;D Hoist! 8)
Ummmmmmmmmm, I'm not commenting on that one Howie ::) :P :huepfenjump3:

Yup, that's what I figured, Chief!  :)

Or it only dripped a drop or two because it was wayyyyyyyyy underfilled during line assembly.  We've seen more than a few here that came out that way.

I changed the screws on mine and it was no big deal. It was on the side stand. I loosened the screw and then with the the new screw in one hand I removed the old screw with the other. As soon as you get a few threads started with the new screw it won't leak any more. I had a drain pan but I don't think it was really necessary. The oil was going into my palm instead of the pan. A few rags spread out would probably do just as well. About a palm full of oil came out.

Has anyone ever got a good explanation for why the MOCO would put the $4.00 screws on a $30,000.00 bike to begin with.  How much do you figure the company saves with those brass (or whatever they are) screws that they use instead of stainless or chrome?                    . . . and we just keep buying more.

The question illustrates even more inane and parsimonious behavior on their part then just those screws suggest.  There are lot of places where we get similarly hosed.  If you buy the chrome oil line cover, for example, it comes with the chrome bolts to complete its install.  Instead we got the cover, but got it with ugly bolts.  Several of the covers or other bits that normally come as accessories with hardware we didn't get the hardware for.

How about the polished floating rotors on the front and the standard rotor on the back wheel..how's that for going "on the cheap" for a $35K bike?  :-\

My first Harley was an '03 Road King Classic.  It had a huge ugly Phillips screw on the dash, but thank goodness HD had a replacement screw with a bar and shield cover and it was only $19.95.  I think they make some parts ugly on purpose just to sell the replacement parts.
