Tour pack charging outlet
« on: March 09, 2007, 11:33:23 PM »

OK you electrical engineers. When I added the tour pack spoiler the harness came with a pigtail for a tour pack light. Which is a useless piece of junk. So, I want to add a charging outlet for my cell phone etc. Has anyone done this? I saw a unit at the auto parts store which had a cover, but it would just kinda hang there. So I thought if anyone's done it they could give me some pointers. Thanks in advance.

Bubba has done it if I remember correctly.  I'd thought about it in mine.  But the power outlet added under my left leg to do everything (battery tender, heated clothes, aux unswitched 12v) made it redundant.  Might be convenient to drop a phone and close the tour pak.  But I just never messed with it.  Your right though.  The power and grounds for the tour pak light could be hooked up to a plug to run a phone charger.

I put one in mine. I had an old one laying around w/ an 'L' bracket attached (for mounting under dashboard etc) so I use the mounting bolts for the rider backrest - a 5 min job.

Hey, now thats a good idea. I was going to double stick tape it. Lots of good hockey players from up your way.

Yes, I've done it - exactly how you suggest.  Bought the 12v Cigar lighter socket with a cover, mounted it in the tourpak with doubble sided tape, made a tiny slit in the tourpak liner to pass the wire through, ordered the plug and pins to mate to the socket for the light, put a 5A inline fuse in.  Simple.  :)

Do I have to put the inline fuse in? What is its function?
Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike.  No, not essential.  Function is to blow if somebody plugs anything with too high a current draw,  or if something metal gets dropped in to the open socket, or whatever.

I was just going to solder and shrink wrap the wire connections, you said you ordered the pins and socket to match, you must have a crimper.

Never did on my 06 CUSE or my 03 CUI, RJ, but I've yet to take to the road on my CUSE² so I can't say if it's different. I sure hope not though!

I must have had a bad ground or something.  Guess I won't worry about it.

Might not be the bike Rog.  Might have a "noisy" charger.

The phone was on and I think it cycled with the light blinking on the phone.  I'll have to check it again.  It was feedback through the radio speakers as I recall.
