billet boys license plate frame
« on: March 12, 2007, 12:48:44 AM »

Looking to buy a license plate frame. Interested in one with brake/running lights/turn signals if I can find the right one. Looking for something functional but not one where the led lights are to prominent. (preferring to see the chrome and not the lights).  I have seen one by Billet Brothers that I like but it is rather expensive and not sure if it will fit on SERK. It is listed on p. 378 of J & P Cycles. Haven't found it anywhere else. They also make license plate mounting brackets but I am not sure if one would be needed here. Any info on quality and fit would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, jj.

Yea the 07 serk kinda limits you as far as licence plate framming. Not much room under the toombstone tail light.

Thanks for the info skreminegul07. However after talking to hd-dude I was informed that the billet boys license plate frame would fit, with simple mods, and I liked the looks of it better. It is really clean and the 4 screws that hold the cover as shown on the Kuryakyn are hidden on the Billet Boys frame. I also thought that the Billet Boys would provide more additional lighting though I may have been wrong. Does the Kuryakyn provide just a direct light to the license plate or does it actually have brake and running lights? Thanks again, jj.

I just talked to hd-dude (Jim) about purchasing a Billet Boys license plate frame. I must say I have never talked to a salesman that was more courteous or knowledgable about their product than he was. He was more than kind enough to offer tips and hints which he was able to do as he uses the products that he sales which is not always the case. I would highly recommend him to anyone needing hd accessories for their bike. I would note that though he has a web site linked to his profile, he informed me that a lot of the products he sales are not listed on his site. Jim if you read this you might want to consider at least including a listing of products on your website, even if you don't have the details included, so that everyone would know what you have to offer. Thanks for everything, JJ

I like the idea of moving the plate down, but unlike some of the earlier years, we don't have the SUBTOTRF. Ours is a nice cloisonne emblem.

Is there a plate relocation product that doesn't cover up the fender bling?

The 3163 is just the frame attached to the HD rear light bar. They do sell the complete set up with lights and I think Kuryakyn makes the HD parts.

The option below looks cool. 2098 turn signals and bar. Then you need a 3162 curved license plate frame to go with it.

Twojay...  I've also looked at the Billet Boys plates and have to agree with you; they are really nice... pricey, but nice.  Can you explain more on the simple mods that would need to be accomplished to make them work.  Thanks!

I will be able to tell you more later but as I understood from talking to hd-dude, you need to utilize the mounting bracket that comes with the SERK but you will have to drill holes in it to adapt it to the billet boys frame. Process involves taking off rear light assembly, connecting wires from license plate mount to SERK, and modifying the existing bracket to accept the Billet Boys frame. I had originally wanted the running/brake/turn signal model but after advising hd-dude that I had already installed the hd module for running/brake/turn signals he told me that it would not work (or at least not look right, as billet turn signals are yellow and the hd conversion gives you red turn signals) so I went with the brake/running light edition. It is also three sided (led lights), gives you one extra light for running and two that appear as brakes. hd-dude also informed me that the bracket had no real top or bottom so it could be mounted with either side on top - meaning you can mount the billet boys with the running  light on top or on bottom, with either way of course still leaving you with two additional brake lights on the outside edge of the frame.

EXCELLENT feedback!    :bananarock:

Once you complete the upgrade, I would love to hear your final opinion on how difficult it was to install and a picture would be great too.

Thank you...

I am hoping to install my billett brothers license plate frame this weekend. Installation will require tying into brake and running lights. It was  suggested that I just tie into the electrical lines and solder the new connections.  Do I need to disconnect battery terminals, pull any fuses or do anything other than leave the ignition switch turned off so as to avoid the possibility of any electrical mishaps? tia, jj.
