broken pushrod
« on: March 12, 2007, 09:57:38 AM »

i was riding on sat and lost rear cyl. made it to first exit on one jug and did a quick roadside diagnosis. made a call to HDDUDE to pick his brain and found rear cyl dead. there was some clanking noises but they seemed to come from clutch area. i made a call to my son and he came about 30 miles to get me and the bike. DUDE and i had put the freedom14 cams in about 3000 miles ago and one of the andrews moly pushrods broke. went and got a set of SE pushrods and got it going in a couple of hours

Looks like a clean break, most likely no contamination in the engine?

Good luck with teh swap to SE units :2vrolijk_21:  Good to make such a quick fix and repair.

Skippy

Ask Brad that question.
Tell him it is the same thing that happened to me that he resolved on the phone while he was having dinner with his wife.
Mine, Vanamals is two times to many!
There is no damage because the valves are stuck in the closed position.
But a pain in the a$$ to go get a trailer to pick up your bike.
Plus, you got people like JC that don't have a trailer. :nixweiss:
On mine the threaded insert broke.
Brad said it was a once in a lifetime occurance.
The shop where I bought the repalcement threaded insert had never heard of that happening.

Ask Brad, he will stand behind his stuff!

Comparing the two pushrods- andrews moly vs SE the SE rods were considerably larger. I thought i was the first. The push rod seems to have broken at the jam nut. The other end of the threaded part is still inside the rod itself. I :bananarock: dont have a trailer either!

EXACTLEY Van

The rest of the adjuster rod was inside of the hollow pushrod tube.
That was October 2005.
And I have plenty of trailers. :2vrolijk_21:
Just don't like using them because I have to. :nixweiss:

Alrighty....won't be using those pushrods when I do the cam install.  Think I'll just stick to the Feuling parts for those components, and just get the necessary parts for the cam itself from Freedom (or hd-dude)!!  With my luck, something like this would happen when I'm 1500 miles from home in BFE.

Sorry to hear about the pushrod breaking.  I did Freedom cams and pushrod and have about 17,000 miles on it and haven't had issues yet now I will wonder.  Wonder if was a bad batch of push rods?

to me its seems to be a weak spot in the pushrod. it broke right at the point the jam nut and pushrod meet. it wasnt out of adjustment. i think ill send it to brad at freedom and let him have a look :bananarock:

Gents, not to interject the whole "Zippers vs Freedom" thing in to this thread (as I tend to believe there is no wrong answer on their cams, both good parts).  But you might take a look at the push rods Zippers offers.  They were monsters.

Admittedly, they're big enough that there's not enough adjustment to install them without lifting the top.  But once you get them in there they are incredibly robust and very stiff.  Worth a look anyway if anyone ever finds themselves needing a set of pushrods.

Skippy

I would say,

#2, #3

Had 2K miles on the motor. Nancy and I was riding down 77 just about Rock Vegas and I heard the rattling.
Done, toast, bike on the trailer. Can't say it was because I had stretched it out, had only been running about 85.
My opinion, poor metal in the threaded adjuster rod.

amazingly i bent a crane aluminium pushrod today. No warning, just a lot of sudden noise. I picked up the screamin eagle set already to get on the road.
