Go pro Hero 7 camera helmet mount
« on: April 18, 2019, 01:38:38 AM »

I am looking at purchasing a Go pro Hero 7 and I am looking for a good helmet mount. I use a half helmet. I would appreciate any ideas or thoughts.

Thanks in advance.

I have the helmet adapter for the gopro that came with the camera positioned on the top of my helmet.
For me it is the preferred spot, no vibration from the bike, full forward view and plenty of people notice waving back and smiling.  I'm sure it looks out of place up there but I don't think anyone has gone off the road do to uncontrolled laughter.
I had it mounted on the center of the fairing just below the screen trim secured with a light weight cable but it picks up engine noise and vibration there.

Like Joel I use the helmet mount that came with GoPro. I have an older model Hero 4 I think. It works great on my half helmet mounted on upper forehead

I know the view can be interesting but this isn't what helmets were designed for or to protect against.  Even if camera accessories are there for helmets it's not what the helmet is intended to mount.  This idea always made me uncomfortable.  After Michael Schumacher's accident it concerned me even more.  If I'm actually going to wear a lid I'd like that tool to have the best chance it can of protecting my head.

Can you elaborate? I'm not familiar with the Schumacher accident. Does a 3oz camera somehow jeopardize the structural integrity of the helmet? I'm not being facetious. I have read many of your posts on this site and value your opinion.

Google the Michael Schumaker accident. If you were to land on your head (I have) and the camera is the point of impact you would think it would just snap off, but this is not always the case, either it breaks a hole in the fiberglass helmet or it is forced down into your face which has no protection anyway because you have a half helmet on. Just sayin, Don't want anything mounted on my very expensive helmet to prevent it from doing its job which is to protect my head (and face in my case as I wear a full face helmet). But we all have opinions and wear helmets for different reasons.

A little over five years ago now.  He is (was) an F1 driver that was skiing on holiday.  Wearing a GoPro or something similar on his helmet.  Good helmet.  Had an accident and landed just wrong and the camera mount drove through the helmet.  F1 driver on holiday one day and a bare remnant of himself the next.  Long term coma, most reporting had him as near vegetative at worse or otherwise significantly challenged at best though the family has held health reports very close in the years since the accident.

Even before this I never quite understood the fascination with mounting something on a safety device that the safety device was never intended for.  The engineering and design teacher in me can't help but rebel at the notion.  Hang the stuff on handlebars, fairings, tour paks; whatever.  None of those bits will care if a camera or its mount dings them.  That's just not what my helmet was designed for nor what my head cares to accept.

I understand what you are saying but a ski helmet is a far cry from a quality DOT motorcycle helmet. But go with  whatever makes you feel safer. Like I don't understand why people put horns, spikes and other sharp and jagged chrome parts all over their bikes.

Certainly a consideration (the differences between helmets).  The investigation released at the time, however, showed Schumacher wasn't wearing some thin or foam helmet but instead a hard shelled lid.  To continue your theme, I'm just not sure why someone would want to to mount jagged bits on their helmet.  The helmet's only job is what's inside.  Anything that might compromise that seems a spurious choice.  But that's just my head.  There's an old pic here somewhere that has JR with the perfect camera mount on his helmet.  I'd be in favor of that.

Then the same would true for a side mounted Sena type communication unit.

If you say so.  Though, even were this so, I'd still be more sanguine with an impact point causing damage that might impact my cheek or jaw then were a similar issue happening up top and into my skull and brain.

RicRak makes some nice GoPro mounts for bikes.  I like that much better than on the helmet.  They have different versions for different bikes.

I know for a fact that using my GoPro actually makes me safer. I live in Texas and rarely wear a helmet unless GoPro is on. And yes I know I should wear a helmet all of the time even if not required by state law. I'm just glad I don't live in a "nanny state" and I have the freedom to choose.
