Looking for Las Vegas Ride Suggestions
« on: March 14, 2007, 09:50:53 AM »

I am going to be in Vegas next week (3/21-3/25) from Wednesday afternoon until Sunday morning.  Have rented a couple of bikes at LVHD for Thursday and Friday.  My current plan is to ride to Death Valley (and back) on Thursday.  Haven't decide on Friday's ride yet.  Both are planned to be day rides so we don't miss any Vegas nightlife.   8)

I did the Zion, North Rim, South Rim, Williams, AZ, Rt. 66, Hoover Dam run this past October for my honeymoon and it was one of the best trips of my life.

I am looking for suggestions on things/places/sights, etc. that are definite "Don't miss" or "Don't bother" on the Death Valley ride and any other suggestions as to route, etc. that might not be obvious to someone who hasn't done it before.

I am also looking for suggestions for Friday's ride.  Thanks in advance for any help!!!!

Doug; Death Valley is a good !st choice, and will be seeing it at the best time of the year. I kid my friends saying if you haven,t been to PAHRUMP, NV you don,t ride. The straight aways from LV to Pahrump are great, come to think on it right up Hubbards, and Chips alley 140+mph no problem.....Easy 2nd day you could go to laughlin ride the water taxi,s-AK

If you want some really different scenery then try Mount Charleston about 30 miles NW of town on US95.  Just off the highway the road (state 157) starts going up, the terrain changing from desert to forest.  You'll get some twisties on the way up and some great views from the top.  There's a restaurant up there too with an open deck.  About 2/3 of the way up, another road (state 158) turns off to the right that connects up to another mountain road (state 156) that feeds the Las Vegas ski area.  All of this is mountain riding in the middle of the desert--makes for a great change.  Remember to plan for cooler temps up there--much cooler.  I was there two weeks ago and it was in the thirties with snow at the ski area but the roads were completely clear.  Sunny and downright warm in the sun, though, so don't let the numerical temp scare you.

A nice trip would be up to Mt. Charleston via US95 and state 157, have a bite to eat/drink, then back down to state 158 over to 156 and up to the ski area.  More food/drink is available there, and then return to US95 on 156.

Check out the page below, I have it opened to the Las Vegas area, but there's a lot of bike travel into on this site.

For a nice little ride that's close to town and still beautiful to see the best short ride from Vegas is probably to go through Red Rock Canyon.

We did Mt. Charleston 2 years ago and it was a great ride. What a contradition to the desert floor. I'd recommend it as a must do! LVHD is great to work with. They'll fix you up with everything you need including ride suggestions.

Ditto the Hoover Dam, South Rim of Grand Canyon, North Rim of Grand Canyon, and Zion.  I'd throw in Bryce Canyon.

I'd have to spend some time with the map, but we rented bikes in Henderson.  We did Hoover Dam and went on to spend a night at a lodge at the South Rim (just north of Tusayan, AZ).  We rode the next day to spend the night in a lodge at the North Rim (just south of Jacob Lake, AZ).  From the North Rim we rode down and spent a night in Hurricane, UT (visit Zion H-D in Washington, UT).  We spent some time in Zion National Park and went up and spent a night in a lodge at Bryce Canyon National Park.  The next day we rode back into Las Vegas.

We made this loop in five days/four nights.  I don't think that it was more than 300 or 400 miles in any one day.

BlueFlames, sorry for sort of covering ground that you've already travelled.  Bryce Canyon could be a one day out and back kind of ride from Las Vegas.  You can probably find info on the web about the national park.  Here's one photo from Bryce . . .

Thanks for the suggestions guys.  I am going to check out Mt. Charleston this weekend.

Twojay - In October we did Vegas to Zion 1st Day, Zion to N. Rim to Jacob Lake 2nd day, Jacob Lake to South Rim and then to Williams Az - 3rd day, Williams Via Rt. 66 to Hoover Dam and back to Vegas the 4th day.  I'm thinking is was between 8-900 miles total - but they were the best miles I have ever ridden.  Even the ladies enjoyed the ride as much or more than the destinations.  I have the entire thing plotted out on mapquest with each stop, the hotel info, etc.  If you are interested post or send me a PM and I will email it to you.

I am soo looking forward to the warm weather and getting some miles in on two wheels....   :)

Red Rock Canyon is good and if ya want a break from pavement ,you can rent jet skis at Lake Mead. One pretty Lake and long rides. Oh by the way good fishin then get back on your scooter and enjoy the night life. Looks like you already seen the major seenery last year.
