Garmin 396 GPS installation help
« on: April 21, 2019, 07:53:02 PM »

I bought this GPS for my 2013 Road King. I know the unit itself works because it had a little battery life left when it arrived. I could turn it on and browse through the functions.

I went to wire it up to the bike today. A pretty straight forward job, so I thought. Just your basic positive/negative connections to the battery. The GPS however won't turn on. I tried it with the ignition on, the bike itself on, and not getting anything. Looked at installation videos to see if I'm missing something. From what I see, there should be nothing wrong with my method (red wire on positive, black on negative).

Any suggestions? I'm stumped.

Have you checked bike wire you hooked to and verified it has power.  Also try the unit in the automobile cradle - I think it comes with one. If bike has power and unit works in automobile cradle then perhaps the bike cradle it mounts to is the problem.

If you put the unit in the cradle an just holds the red cable to the positive post and the black cable to the negative pole it should start up. If not then the cradle is faulty.

BTW, NEVER connect anything (apart from battery tender cables) directly to the battery!

ALWAYS Connect accessories to an ignition controlled outlet.
