Something is wrong. If I leave my on all the time, it will last several weeks. I ususally just have it on when I'm traveling or in a motel. I've replaced it once since last Sept. HTH  :-\

Hmmm...Where is the damn receipt?! I need to get it swapped out obviously...THanks!

Thanks to Coyotedata's great suggestion I've added the little antenna for the pager transmitter to the tourpak. Works great! :2vrolijk_21: Thanks for the idea, the part #s and the supplier!
Here's a watchout even if you don't add the antenna. When I got to the Smartsiren II box I found the dealer had run the little coax under the plastic housing that is bolted down to the side frame and it was nearly crushed flat. :'( I was able to cut the coax back from that point to add the new connector so it's not a problem. It's a wonder it worked as well as it did. Anyway, if any of you are having range issues you might take a look at the installation to see if you have the same problem.

I'm glad it worked out for you.

Yeah the moco designer did not allow a good way to get the cable out. It's very easy to smash the coax and possible to actually have it short out.

That's a good catch and reminder to look out! -Keith

I've been a mile or more away outside. But what really makes the difference is overnighting at a hotel/motel. I have always had a signal, even inside. You often won't with the stock set up. If you are parked in front of a motel room, both work fine.

Would it hurt to put it under the fairing? My tour pak comes off so that is not a good place, didn't know if that would work there?

Thank's Ernie

Sure, it will help to do the mod there. Just remember, the more metal around the antenna the worse your results will be. Anything will be better than the stock set up though.

I will say I have done several of these installs on Road Kings using a stud mound antenna between the bike and saddle bags. While not as good as the mod I suggested, they got pretty good results.

Keith,
On the RK mounts, what sort of antenna did you use (horizontal or vertical, etc.) I like the idea of increasing the range but don't like having antenna sticking up on the SERK. I've had my pager work regularly from about 3500, and after that it's 50/50.

The guys that have done this on R/K's all made a little L bracket and mounted it to the saddle bag bracket at the back of the bike (between the rear fender and saddle bag). I don't have a photo to show you. Then they used a 6" rubber whip antenna. This install is more difficult as you need an extender cable to go from the pager module to the antenna. No you need to buy the extender cable or do 4 connector installs (crimps). If you seldom remove your saddle bags, you might do the same as the Ultra but put the antenna in the lid of the saddle bag. It wouldn't be quiet as good but better for sure.

Any problem with cutting the antenna lead and putting on a coax F connector?

Thanks

Nothing other than an F connector won't really go on that small coax. (and it's a 75 ohm connector but truth is that won't be a real issue here)

Sorry, I meant cutting the long lead on the 433 Mhz antenna from dig-key.  I am going to put the antenna in the top of a saddlebag, and don't want all the extra cable.  What type of connector should I put on so it mates with the connector you recommend for the small antenna wire from the siren.

Thanks

CONREVSMA007 will mate with the other one I specified and should work.

Smart Siren II w/Pager Alarm new antennae installed!
« Reply #43 on: May 26, 2008, 07:10:30 PM »

Thanks coyotedata

Did exactly what you said in post 1 of this thread and I now feel secure for my long trips planned this summer.
To fasten the antenna in the lid I re-used the 6" velcro strip with adhesive back that came with the Smart Siren II setup.
My only issue was I couldn't find my stripper/crimper tool and had to run to the hardware store and spend $7.
Coax needs to be put together carefully, but the parts you suggested made this pretty easy.

Thanks again for the great post.
