Wide tire Bagger
« on: March 19, 2007, 05:54:56 PM »

This is from my post on Chopperweb.

This past Sunday I started work on a Wide Tire bagger install. The owner of the bike purchased the "kit" through Ebay at a decent price. The donor bike is a 2000 Ultra Geezer Glide. The bike was purchased at a decent price also via Ebay. See the trend here?  This is a project that the owner has full control over and is lending a hand also. Or more like I'm the extra hand overseeing the work.

The "kit" requires you spread the frame rails out to 9" in between them in order to fit the new steel fender. While I like the idea of a steel fender I don't care for altering the frame. Besides spreading the frame you have to "clearance" several spots.

Since I felt there was to much "clearancing" to be done we decided to split the fender by about 12" long and the thickness of a cut off blade. This proved to be just enough to close the fender so it would fit between the rails without further spreading of the frame.

The kit uses a 1 1/8" belt as opposed to the stock 1 1/2".

With this particular kit you move the motor and transmission over 3/8" to the left. This is rather simple in a Bagger. There was a supplied front motor mount with the motor holes moved the required 3/8". From there it was a matter of shortening the lower mount and extending the upper mount.

One other wide tire kit offsets the primary via a spacer and a main shaft extension along with an extended transmission shaft.

There was a small issue with the swing arm which the seller and manufacture took care of. So we're waiting on that to align the tire. We have a mock up wheel and tire until the RC Components Venom 18 x 5.5 comes in. *** after looking for a 18" solid I saw that a design was the same price so we opted to go that route and will eventually replace the front wheel also.***

The license plate and turn signals were figured out this afternoon. While a flush mount would look cool it wouldn't match the rest of the bike. A Street Glide style light setup with a smoked lay down lens and Kuryakyn license plate bracket will be used. Since this is a Bagger the Tour Pack HAS to go back on. I'm going to order one of FBI'S detachable setups tomorrow. That should take care of that with a few modifications.

This bike is getting a 200. I think the 180 would be a better choice but its not mine. From what I've seen so far making the motor mount is no big deal. So the offset is easily done with the offset mount and narrow belt. Next is the swing arm, it is about 1" wider to the left. (I think a wide tire Dyna arm will do the trick or a arm off of a new 200 tire Dyna) The key would be to get your hands on a FBI fender as it installs over the existing rails with no rail mods. This would allow a 180/200 tire to go.

Being the cheap curious type that I am  I found/figured out what can and can't be done. A 180 WILL go on a stock bagger with a belt, pulley and fender change. In order to not move the motor or extend the the primary a 1" belt and pulley would have to be used. Add a 8 1/4" fender and your almost done. A little bracket tweaking and some hardware changes and your riding on a 180 for far less than the 200 kits. How much of the tire do you really see?

We made it back to the garage and worked on getting the fender on the bike. The first thing we did was to bring the frame horns back in and make them square. From there there was a bracket that needed to be trimmed and welded. While the welder was out the shock mounts received some weld to compensate for the stuff that was ground off on the inside of the frame.

This is where we split the fender and narrowed it some.

We'll work on the tag bracket along with the wiring next. We have to weld up one of the pipes as we found a crack in it after the heat shield was removed. I'll get a call into my parts supplier tomorrow and see where the detachable tour pack mounting kit is.

We put a little time in on the Bagger Friday night. Our goal was to get the tour pack to be detachable. As easy as it sounded since we ordered a detachable bracket, it wasn't. We ran into we had one companies kit and another's parts. In the picture there is a hole next to the shock mount hole. This is where the seat strap usually goes. On a ordinary Bagger this is where the front of the detachable tour pack mount would go. If we went that route the rear clip on part of the detachable bracket would have no place to clip to. We decided to move the bracket back and use an existing hole for the rear clip on portion and make a new hole for the front of the detachable bracket.
