HD extended warranty
« on: March 20, 2007, 06:16:36 PM »

I will be picking up my new FLHTCUSE2 in a couple of months and will have to decide if I am going to shell the $$ out for the extended warranty.  Lots of goodies and gadgets on this bike to tear up.  Anyone got thoughts on getting the extended warranty?  Pictures coming in 2 months.

Many thanks.

Not worth it, You have to ask yourself how long are you going to keep, If you want to hop it up mods and take a chance that because something went wrong and are denied a Claim ( NOT THAT IT WOULD HAPPEN) :) you would be out the extra money plus the $$$ of the repair.

Spend the money on Chrome or Leather not on the extended warranty.

It depends on what you're willing to pay for to get repaired.  If you do performance mods internally to your engine, you might be denied a warranty claim.  But remember, they have to prove that the modification caused the failure.  You don't have to prove that it didn't.  Also, there is a lot of electronic goodies to go wrong on the bike, that performance mods to your engine will have no effect on.  If your radio goes bad after warranty, you could be looking at close to a grand to replace it, with the navigations system and all.  You have to weight what could happen and see if it worth it for you to have the warranty or not.  Replacing a tire or two under the wheel option will pay for that coverage in no time.  I'm planning on keeping this bike a long time.  Not that I won't buy a new one again, but because this is a CVO, I'm keeping it, so I got the 7 year warranty.  Also, you can cancel it at anytime and get a pro-rated refund, plus it is transferrable if you sell the bike later, which may or may not be a benefit to having it.  I like the peace of mind it gives me ... so I have one...I'll take my chances and fight with the dealer when if I ever need to make a warranty claim, rather than know up front that I'm going to have to shell out my money...I financed the warranty, so it costs me a couple extra bucks a month for that piece of mind.  Worth it in my mind...just my $0.02.

I bought the warranty on my '06 CUSE and wish that I had not.  I haven't cracked the engine on my mods, but I've done SERT, K&N filter, and D&D 2 into 1 exhaust.  My dealer says that they'll do their best to cover me if I have a problem, but they don't know what would happen if I had a problem out on the road.

I don't know what the warranties are running now, but I paid about $1,500.00.  I put my money in my pocket and consider myself self insured.  What are the chances that you're going to have a problem that costs you over $1,500.00.  You're also going to have to pay a $50.00 deductable on any covered repair too.

I've got a SERK due in sometime over the next couple of weeks.  I don't plan on buying the warranty for the new bike.

There might not be one single repair at $1500, unless you blow an engine or tranny, but it wouldn't take many smaller repairs, at the cost of parts and labor to suck up that $1500 dollars, even with the $50 deductible.  If you've got a lot of cash laying around that you can afford to dump into repairs, then don't get the warranty.  I used mine twice on my 02, each repair would have cost me over $300 and I only had a two year extended on that one, so that warranty only cost me about $500 at the time, so I broke even.  It's whatever you feel comfortable with...

I had a great typed up answer to this whole thing, but it sounded like I was just repeating what RedDevil was stating. I bought the whole nine yards and the warm and fuzzy feeling is something good. Too many things to go wrong with these bikes. Now, my only agenda is the run the tires off of it and if something does go wrong, I drop it off and pick it up later, ready to ride some more and knowing exactly what my out put of monies will be. I can budget that!

Deja Vu!!!!!  I think the word "warranty" is a misnomer.  It is an Extended Service Plan.  It isn't effective until the 2 year OEM warranty runs out.  I bought one for my SEUC.  Even if one does mod his engine, there is still PLENTY of stuff which can..........and will............go wrong for which the plan will pay to make good.

Had one on my '99 and it came in really handy.  For example - had continuous problems with the cruise control surging intermittently.  Replaced the module twice (among other things which I forget).  Stator & voltage regulator.  Cam chain tensioners.  Cracked mounting bracket for king tour pak (they have since redesigned this).  Several other things over the 7 years  and 74k I had the bike.  Well worth in imo if you plan to keep (and ride) your bike.  Did not get it my new jester bucause I did not want to shell out extra dough.  But I can pick it up any time before the 2 year factory warranty expires.  Will pay a little more if you buy it later - about $150 if I recall correctly.  You guys jump in if I am wrong on that number.

Understand that I think the warranty is a great thing if you have a problem and the problem is covered under the warranty.  I just think that with some of the mods that we do to our bikes (and I think they need them), even the standard warranty is questionable.  When I bought my warranty on my '06 CUSE, I thought that it would be great to just keep the stock filter, pipes, efi, etc. and enjoy a warranty until 2011.  Now, after the mods, I wonder just how much warranty I actually enjoy.

If you're not going to do anything to violate your warranty, buy the extended one.  If you're going to void your warranty with mods, why buy an extended one?

Yes i believe  thats right.  I thought i would wait the 2 yrs and waste the $$  away on stuff  now. Who knows if I turn out to be Anna Nicholes  kids dad???  Ill  buy bushtech's  for the house!!    Not worth the $150 savings just yet on a newbie motor.. If it hangs tough then  its worth it for the toys and such at 23 months into it :nixweiss:

Worth every penny. I had cams & other mods on my 2003 Ultra. Never an issue. Minor sensors ect.. failure will pay for it. If you trade before its up you get a prorated refund. If you sell outright it's a great selling tool. :2vrolijk_21:

My .02.  When I bought the new bike, I did not buy the extended warranty.  But, if I keep it, I will buy it before the 2 year warranty runs out.  Did the same on my 02 RK - waited until the warranty was almost up and bought the extended.

Why wait?  Did not pay interest for 2 years on a warranty that doesn't kick in for 2 years.

BTW, the warranty on the RK was one of my better investments.  Got back 2 times + the amount spent on it so far, and counting.

If I recall correctly, the warranty is a bit cheaper if you buy it when you buy the bike.

If you plan on keeping your bike for a while - with all the electronic goodies (mine ordered with Bluetooth, Nav, etc.) then I would go with the extended warranty.

One major repair and it has paid for itself - and trust me - I am sure something will go wrong in a bad way after the first warranty expires...

It's kind of like "insurance."  Would you ride around with insurance?

By the way, you CAN cash in the extended policy.  I did that on my last one.  While it wasn't the whole amount...it was something.  I think I got something like $175 back out of my $400 policy.  I was happy regardless.

Depends if you're moding your bike a lot or not?  If you're talking pipes, intake and maybe a mapping of the ECM.  If you're talking about doing anything serious, then you may opt not to get it.

My $0.02 worth.
