Free Updates From Naviextras for Boombox GTS
« on: May 28, 2020, 06:59:30 PM »

On my previous (pre-2018) CVOs i always got free map updates from Naviextras. Now with the Boombox GTS head unit on my 2019 FLHXSE it appears that to upgrade from the MY-19 to MY-20 maps I have to pay. The MY-2019 map is what was on the bike at delivery in March 2019. Any comments on this please? Thanks

Yes, with the 2019 the map updates are no longer free.  Cant remember if this was started in 18 or 19, but you do not get free updates any more.

Thanks for that Dave. Approx $100 for a map upgrade that is already a year out of date. Think I will stick with my Google Maps through CarPlay rather than spending that money.

Don't be fooled by the map year in Naviextras descriptions, Peter - they are much more out of date than that, and simply not worth a penny. Another example of HD's pennypinching.

A little off topic but it is my belief that integrated navigation on vehicles (cars/bikes) will be obsolete before long. Now that most new cars (and now motorcycles) have Android Auto & Car Play capabilities the need for integrated navigation isn't needed. When the mapping software on the phone is free and can be displayed on the infotainment center of vehicles who's going to pay for map updates. :nixweiss:

This is actually the standard practice in the automotive world as well. My BMW, and Ram trucks all require subscriptions to update maps. The cartography is almost always  out of date even when updated which is why I use Waze and other online platforms, other than Google as I do not need my every movement recorded.

Thank you for all your replies. The only reason I would want to use my HD Infotainment Boombox navigation is when cell coverage on my phone becomes sparodic; this is a common occurence in the parts of Britain where cell masts are lacking in coverage.

Thread jacking a bit here but if your location services are turned on, you're able to pull your movement history in Google maps even if you don't use them.

My 2019 BMW has 4 years of mapping updates. It's already been done twice.

I like to plan my trips on the PC.  Multi week trips can involve a considerable amount of research and planning.

Ever try to import a .gpx file into Google maps?

I always liked using the bikes maps, until the GTS.  GTS does not take a city for a destination, it wants complete address.  Also 9 out of 10 times the GTS does not understand me, or gets it wrong when I verbally tell it where I want to go.

Found out Siri gets it right 9 out of ten times when I tell it where I want to go.  Siri is much easier to use for directions or to find a City.  Pretty much always use CarPlay now, as phone calls are louder this way too.

Use bike maps only when doing a ride we created in ride planner.

Several Apps now allow you to download maps for offline navigation.

The naviextras junk, and the HD Boombox implementation of it is so poor, I'm happy to continue to use my Garmin with the free lifetime map upgrades in any case.

And Garmin have just released their Zumo XT with super bright 5.5" screen. And guess what - its a new type of mount.   :confused5:

It's no use to me, Peter - doesn't support TPMS, and has no audio cable to connect to my bike, so I'll be sticking with my 590 upgraded with 595 firmware.
