Front Motor Mount
« on: November 08, 2004, 02:24:52 PM »

I had around 14k miles on my 03 FLHRSEI2 when I noticed a great deal of vibration at idle.  Brought it in and learned that the front rubber motor mount had failed.  Also, learned that this is happening a great deal to our bikes.  Anyone else have this problem?

The one on my 2002 Electra Glide Classic failed at 15,000 miles.  Not an uncommon thing on FLH's at all, from what I've been told.  I had not really noticed any difference in the way the bike felt when mine went, however.  It was in for service when the tech let me know it was busted and showed me what it looked like.  Leaving there, though, the bike definitely felt smoother at all rpm's than when I took it in.

SEEG at 7,000 miles is OK, so far. [smiley=nervous.gif]

My front mount was loose on my 03 SERK at 12k... I had em check it again at 15k and all 3 were loose, but none failed.  It's a good thing to wrench on every once in a while I suppose.

Had the front on tightened on my SEEG at 15,000 felt a vibration in the floor boards was the only indication that I had.

You know the old saying, "if you want something done right - you've got to do it yourself"  The service manual calls for the mounts to be re-torked at 1k, and every 10k miles.  I finally gave up on taking my bike in for routine service.  Too many missed items from 3 different HD dealers.  I do everything myself now and I know it's all done right when it's suppose to be done.  I have found that the mounts do need to be torked at the prescribed service intervals and suspect that if neglected they would eventually loosen and fail.  My guess is some of these problems may be the result of neglect on the part of the servicing dealers.  Especially the top mounts because the tank must be partially removed in order to tork them.  Frankly, I'm suprised that the bikes don't have more nuts and bolts loosening when you consider the vibration that they are subject to.  Oh well, thats my 2 cents worth!! Here is an opinion form one of the H-D service people in my area:

My experience seeing how these mounts fail shows that the cast rubber
molding between the steel mounting areas deteriorates from time and/or oil
soak conditions from the oil filter being above the mount and no way to
clean it properly after changing the filter. The oil soaks into the rubber
and softens it. Re-torking the engine mount attaching hardware would not
prevent or provoke the premature failure of the rubber. We typically see the
front engine mount fail on FL models around 15-20 thousand miles.

Ah, so then a solution is to never change the oil ? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Like so many of my plans this one seems that it would lack something in long term execution......

I've heard it's no longer an issue with Syn3.  [smiley=lolk.gif]  In fact, now that Glave has proven that Syn3 is junk for the transmission, newer bottles have been re-labeled to say "recommended for use in all H-D engines, primaries and front motor mounts."  [smiley=laugh.gif]

Seriously, though, that is pretty much exactly what I've been told as well.  Who knows, perhaps in the near future we'll see "R&R Front Motor Mount" on the 15,000 mile maintenance schedule. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Check the mount on my SERK, 14k they were a little loose, manual call for torque around the 33ft. lb. range. A little trick I do when changing the oil filter, I slid a peice of pastic under the oil filter, cut from an old antifreeze jug. That let the old oil slid out past the kick stand. I named it the oil slide. Works for me .

I throw several shop towels in the hole under the filter, oil drains on rags not on the engine.

With syntetic oil does that mean the mount will last 30,000 miles before it fails do to oil saturation?
