Volt and Ambient Temp Gauges Bouncing
« on: September 11, 2020, 08:44:36 PM »

Both gauges the needles bounce around at 60-70MPH+
All electrical charging checked out good so replaced the Voltage regulator but still having the same issue.
Any ideas?

Bad/loose ground or gauge connection.

Are the gauges bouncing with equal deflection? Are they bouncing from normal to higher reading and back to normal or from normal reading to lower and back to normal?

What year and model bike are we talking about here

Could be that the dampening has gone bad on both gauges, but is kind of unlikely two at once.  You can check when you turn the IGN on the gauges should go over the full range to the right SLOWLY and then return to the left.  If they make this sweep fast the gauge is bad.

2010 FLHXSE

When I turn on the ignition the Volt gauge goes up to 11 and sits the Ambient air temp stays at the air temp.

They bounce higher and lower than the normal reading. They sit still when not moving then start to bounce as I ride and increases as the bike increases speed.

Get a digital multimeter connected to the battery and go through the same tests you described.

11v is too low for key on test.

If you get  12v or above voltage on battery with key off   then key on reading multimeter,  and voltage drops to 11v and you know you have a good battery ,  might be a short causing voltage drop.

If multimeter reads 12v or above with key on,  do the ride test and see if you get the same voltage swings on the multimeter and you know regulator is good,   You may have loose compensator nut and alternator rotor spline is striped.   There would likely be shavings in the primary if this is the case

If voltage reading on multimeter connected to battery during ride test is normal ~13.4v   Look under fairing where harness comes into contact with fairing brackets for very small almost invisible wear marks shorting to brackets

I hope all of this makes sense. If you have questions p.m. me and we can talk on the phone
