gear drive cams????
« on: March 27, 2007, 05:04:28 AM »

I'm thinking about upgrading my 2001 FLTRSEI2 to gear driven cams. My question is, do I need to replace the cams or just install gears on my stock cams? Is there a complete kit available for this? What is a dependable cam, if they need to come out?

The bike has stage 1 and a 2 into 1  thunderheader on it. I have 29k on the bike and the stator just failed on my way to Daytona. On the way back the speed sensor went out.

I would like to replace the cam chains before they fail while I'm on the road. Any recommendations would be appreciated...Thanks, Grumpy-Jim

the only issue with the cam gears is if you have any problems on the road ,most likely you will be towing for no dealership will have a fix for you ,,for it is an aftermarket item....if you leave her stock at least they can get you moving again and not ruin your trip...my cam tensioners went at 40,000 and extended warranty took care of it...headpan

Grumpy-
You have to purchase new cams as your chain cams will not accept cam gears.  S&S or Andrews makes a kit where you get cams, cam gears, and gaskets.  You will also need adjustable pushrods which they sell in a kit with tubes.  Some of the other guru's here will have to help you on which cam grind to get for your setup.  Good luck.

Mine is getting the gear drive cam kit as we speak.  They're made by Andrews for S&S.  It seems that a lot of harley dealers are carrying this product.  I am getting mine done at a very reputable v-twin custom shop.  They had a display that shows the amount of tention that is placed on the cam chains.  You could turn an handle and feel how much force is on that chain. Beside it was the gear drive set up.  You could easily get 5 hp or so not having the tention on the chains.  Also, the timing is far more accurate throughout the power band.  I have spoke with several guys who have had this done and nobody had anything but very positive things to say about the gear drive cam system.  It's a little pricey, but you never have to worry about the tentioners failing.

Well, I know where's a lot of guys that have put many miles in the chain drive, but there's a lot that have had problems too, it's a crap shoot! I'd switch to a gear drive, once in and proven, a few 100 miles, I don't think there's many cam related problems. Plus I think the slop in the change, especially after more miles are on it can allow changes in cam timing. The only drawback would be if you have excessive crankshaft runout, then you would have a problem with gear drive, and you won't know until you get it apart. I haven't done mine yet, so maybe I should keep my mouth shut!!! But I'm going to gear drive when I do.

The guys below sell Andrews gear drive kits, with everything needed for $540, I think thats a good price, as far as prices go for HD parts!!!!!!!!!
