Apple CarPlay - The Secret Sauce
« on: November 20, 2021, 08:09:30 PM »

Being new to the CVO and the GTS radio (my other bike is a 2016 Road Glide) it has been interesting to me to hear all of the various steps people are using to get Apple CarPlay to work properly.  I have tried all of them and found the following to be to work successfully every time.  First before reading further this post is for folks that have the whim AND use the Bluetooth headset.  I would love to not have to use the Bluetooth headset but to me it is a very  minor inconvenience having to use it, I just throw it in my saddlebag.  The two items I have found essential and the secret sauce are:

1). First you will need a Apple C89 certified cable.  I have found that that cable used makes a HUGE difference in allowing Apple CarPlay to function properly

2). I have also found that I have tried to rush things in turning on the Bluetooth headset and connecting the iphone.  After starting the bike, Verify that the wireless headset has a good connection to the GTS radio.  This is done by going to Settings >> Wireless Headset >> Manage Rider Headset.  Verify the headset shows as “Connected”.  Once you confirm the Bluetooth headset is connected you can plug in the iPhone to the USB cable and Apple CarPlay will be displayed after a few seconds and be fully functional.

I have found this to work reliable every time.  If you stop and turn the bike off you DO NOT need to shut down and reconnect the Bluetooth headset BUT you will need to reconnect the iPhone to the USB cable AFTER confirming the Bluetooth headset has connectivity to the GTS radio (as previously outlined by checking connectivity in the GTS radio settings).

Hope this helps somebody.  I was really frustrated with Apply CarPlay reliability/ consistency before but am now happily using CarPlay successfully.

Been dealing with this since 2019.  I only use Apple Cables.  Some times the bike does not recognize that connection to the phone.   Only choice is to shut bike down for 3 minutes before restarting.

Its never been consistent on what works every time you start the bike.  I have tried every manor including what you post.  I have just over 55K miles on the bike, so I have lots and lots of time using it.

Just to Say, Pan America has connection issues some times also.

Same issues here, never consistent.

Tried ALL manner of start up, connection sequences, cables, phones, etc, etc.

Sometimes hooks right back up, sometimes 10 minutes riding down the road, sometimes never.

Frustrating to say the least.

H-D dealer and factory no help.

Using a 1/2 m Titan cord.....along with the jumper to trick the bike into thinking there's a headset connected....and worked perfectly for the maybe 20 rides I got in this season.....Carplay open upons start-up if phone is connected

An other item to consider when car play isn’t  loading is to check your Iphone CarPlay setting

-Make sure that Siri is on.

-If your iPhone isn't detected by CarPlay, make sure that CarPlay isn't restricted. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions, tap Allowed Apps and make sure that CarPlay is enabled also check to make sure carplay is enabled while phone is locked.

Then there is the start all over thing.
Go to Settings > General > CarPlay, tap your car, then tap Forget This Car. Then set up CarPlay again.

I have done all this more than one.  Cord now using is a month old apple cord.

Sad but CarPlay connect 100% of the time correctly in my 17 truck and 18 car, but not my 19 bike.  I now have it where 90% of the time it connects correctly and 10% it doesn't.

In 3700 miles I have had connection issues a few times with my Pan America, its only bluetooth no CarPlay.
