excessive wind
« on: November 16, 2004, 01:52:56 PM »

I'm a brand new member here and have owned my 03 SERK for just 3 weeks. This is a great forum and I'm happy to find you all. I love everything about my SERK except more wind compared to my old 02 RKC; and this new bike has the standard RK shield. What I notice is a blast of wind coming up thru each crashbar which I didn't get on the RKC. Could it be because of the solid wheel? The only other front end difference I see are the presence of an oil cooler and lack of passing lites. Has anyone noticed this? Anyone try the chrome fork wind blockers or crash bar covers HD sells? I do plan on cutting the windshield to eye level as on my old bike.

Yes I notice it from the start. Look between the forks below the tree the air baff is gone on the SERK. The fix is a chrome one out of the HD catalog. The two bolts on your bike is long enuff. This came standard on the RK , only it was black. The smoke , chop HD windsheild works good and looks good.        don

I too have noticed the noise. Is the part you're referring to 58520-79TC?

For what it's worth.  Back in 01 I bought a used 2000 Road King that had like 785 miles on it.  For whatever reason the original owner had removed that baffle.  The wind thing you describe was immediately apparent compared to the prior Road Kings I'd ridden.  Nosed around the first afternoon it was home trying to figure out what was different and saw the lack of baffle.  Picked up the chrome piece you listed the part number for, mounted it on, and everything was back to normal.  Amazing that the baffle is left off the SERK?  At least in my experience it made a surprising amount of difference.

Thanks for all the replies. Funny, I'd never noticed anything extra up between the forks on the RKC. The baffle is just a $22 part, cheap by HD standards; should make winter riding lots more comfortable.

I wonderd why HD left this part off of the SERK, the only thing I come up with is it takes away a little of the veiw of the paint work on the fender, bradied steel lines & chrome of the lower tree when it is park, but its worth not having the red eyes and the helmet lift for me.                                         wind talk    don

My understanding was that it was remove to improve air flow over the front jug. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

I was going to buy one but the local dealer said Harley didn't recommend it due to air flow around the engine.  I'd sure like to get one but what's the opinion?  Does it make the heads get too hot or not?  Any  ideas?

Here's a thread on the baffle from the Road King riders forum; some also mention engine heat but no real conclusions. I don't seem to get that much air up thru the triple trees. Mine comes up under each crash bar into my face. Haven't figured out why yet---either no passing lites to block or the solid wheel (less likely).

You're right about the wind coming from near the crash bars.  I can throw my legs over the crash bars and eliminate almost all of it.  But I can't tell, so far, where it originates from.  Maybe the lack of passing lights has something to do with it.  I've also thought about the wind deflectors that mount to the forks.  I'd really like to know what is causing it before I buy something to try to cure it.

I mounted passing lamps on my RK, as well as the lower leg deflectors, and installed a regular height RK windshield for touring. Neither seemed to do much about the wind coming up around the steering head, blowing my hat off. I'm going to try the $22 deflector before I go to Florida for Christmas.

Anyone have pics of the 58520-79TC chrome baffle installed on the SERK?  I am going through a case of OCD now and need more chrome!

I've got passing lamps & indicator combination as the RKC, standard RK shield and the wind deflectors (#58121-85B) ...no problems with wind. well, not on the bike!
