Can anyone tell me why?
« on: April 03, 2007, 11:45:59 AM »

Beautiful weekend for riding, put on about 250 miles Saturday and was on my first poker run of the year and had put on about 80 miles Sunday and my bike quit! :o  Full electrical power to all dash components, the starter turned itover just nothing.  Did the old screwdriver in the spark plug wire ground and no spark.  As I was cycling the power on and off I also noticed that I could not hear the normal fuel pump pressuring up sounds.  Got out my owners manual and replaced both the 15 amp fuel pump fuse and the 15 amp ecm fuse.  Put everthing back together and the the bike fired up and ran great.  But with that what the hell caused that gremlin issue in the back of my mind for the rest of the day.  Anyone got any ideas? :nixweiss:

Blew a fuse?  That blows (pardon the pun).  At this point you don't know if it's something or nothing.  Eyeball everything you eyeball easily.  Shove on connectors you can shove on easily.  Don't worry much unless it does it again.

I've been eyeballing it real close the last couple of days! I see that you are from Joplin Twolanerider, I just got off the phone from Jeremy at Cycle Connection.  He said that it had to be some type of voltage spike and checked the recall on the voltage regulators but my bike wasn't among the recall notices.  Great bunch of guys at Cycle Connection, Scott, Laramie, Jeremy, all of them should be role models for the other HD dealerships.  That's why I travel clear across Oklahoma for them to work on my bike.  The local dealerships are why they are referred to as "stealerships"!  I'll be riding to Joplin with a bunch of extra fused in my pocket real soon!

Will PM you the cell number.  Give a call when you're coming this way and we'll find a place for lunch or something.

I have seen this and experienced this only one time.  It was due to getting a little to much water around the ECM.  It will cause this. Other than that it never happened.  Oh, the cure was to wait it out till it dried, and they start right up.  Did you wash your bike??

You know what?!! After my ride Saturday, I stopped by the local car wash on the way home to clean it up for the poker run Sunday.  I'll be greatly relieved if that is all it is! :orange:

Actually.........  That would worry me even more.  Damn things are supposed to be able to ride in the rain.  If it did it after a car wash I'd be worried about it every time I got caught out in a rain storm.

If you used the power wand to wash it that is a real possibilty! You might want to take the seat off and inspect the wiring harness to see if maybe you have  achaffed wire caused by sitiing on the bike.

I know a lot of people do this (use car wash high power wands) to wash there bikes but I've always been concerned about this. :nixweiss: I've never personally used this method and prefer nothing more then pressure from garden hose to wash my bike.

The only time I do this is when I've ridden in the rain for several hundred miles or more. There is so much grit and grime stuck to the bike that water from a hose just won't get it off and you grind it into the paint and chrome when you suds up.  Other than that, if I'm working on someone else's bike and they haven't cleaned it since they bought it, I blast off the grease and grime before it goes on the workbench. I like workin on bikes, but I hate havin grease and crud all the way to my elbows.

Riding in the rain 2Lane is not a worry.  It's when you force some water in and around the fuse/ecm area unknowingly.

Rhino, you've obviously missed some of the rainstorms I haven't.

Very well could be true. But did your bike ever quit after slogging through one of those gullywashers?
