07 Ultra - Back in the shop
« on: April 04, 2007, 12:09:01 PM »

Noticed some oil leaking the other day so I took it by the dealer. My 6 month old SEUltra with 11k miles has a blown head gasket on the rear cylinder. How depressing.  :bigcry: I love the bike but this is the 3rd major problem. First was the HK radio, then the crossover cracked and now this. The dealer is rushing in the parts so they can get it fixed.

CD,

I'm sorry to hear about your problems. I have heard of others having similar rear head gasket problems, presumably due to excessive heat. Can you give us some specifics about your bike and any modifications you have done that pertain to the engine, ecm, intake and exhaust?

Thanks in advance,

Thats not good to hear. Is your Ultra Stock or have you and your dealer adjusted it from stock?  It doesn't matter to me but it would help others if you listed what has been done if anything.

I'm glad they are getting you back on the road, When they do keep riding it till it blows it's still belongs to them (warranty) that is.  :huepfenjump3:

While it is never good to have these issues and certainly not ones that involve running components, it is good to have this happen while under the warranty and you are fortunate to be able to ride as much as you do.

Fortunately you didn't have the kind of mishap that DynaSoar did with his motor seizing. http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=12288.0

Good luck on a speedy repair and let us know of your mods.

Coyote,
Looking at your post, and mentioning a crack cross-over, I assume you are still running a stock configuration.  That is one thing, if you can afford it, that needs to be taken care of.  The 07's, due to the EPA restrictions, are running very lean, right around 15:1 AFR and therefore run hotter than they should.  You need to open the exhaust/intake up and let the engine breathe better and either PC EX, SERT, TMaxx, or Fuel Pak the ECM.  Also, you need to have that AFR brought down to a more tolerable level....which the aforementioned ECM mods will address if you have a tuner that knows what he/she is doing.  There are some long topics in this forum that address the heat issues of the 110's and the potential problems that it can cause, and what some of us have done to help alleviate the problems.

My dealer mentioned a porous surface issue to. Said they had seen several that way. I won't know for sure until they crack it open. If they find them porous, they will replace the heads. They are planning to pull both cylinders and take a look. I'm lucky to have a good dealer taking care of it but there are always risks when tearing the thing apart.

I ran the bike stock for the first 8k miles. Then had true duals, SEAC, SERT and dyno done. The crossover cracked the day before I was having the true duals installed so I got that labor free.

What kind of temps are you all seeing with similar mods? In slow traffic, I can still see oil temps up to 230. Most of the time is less though. Cool mornings it will stay at 180. Depending on the terrain, it often runs from 180 to 215.

The temps you're running are right in the zone... ::)  Normal riding temp, I was told to expect between 210 and 235.  I run around 225 on mine.

CoyoteData,

I had the same thing happen to my 07 SEUC, but my rear cylinder started leaking oil at 1000 miles. The local dealer called the MoCo and they did a complete engine replacement at no charge to me plus they gave me a free loaner until my bike was fixed. They also added my mods while they had everything off the bike for free. SE A/C, SERT, and True Duels.

We'll see. I plan to ask but 1k miles is probably a lot different to them as 11k miles. Still, that $$ demands a lot more than either of us got.  :-[

How bad was the oil leak?  Were you having to add oil or was it just a slight indication on the fins of the rear cylinder?
thanks, mij

I'm getting a slight leak from the rear cylinder and it looks like it's originating somewhere around the breather bolt. Is that the same location as yours?  :confused5:

Spoke with a MOCO service rep last week ,she steted that it was normal for oil temps to be between 250 to 300 degrees . thats a lot of BS in my book...

Don't believe that...250 is towards the upper end for normal operating...I get about 250-270 now in heavy stop and go traffic, but normal riding, I'm still around 225...The tech at my dealership told me normal operating should be between 210-235....
