New 2007 CVO Ultra Question...
« on: April 05, 2007, 11:43:20 PM »

Greetings,

I have a CVO Ultra on order which should be here (WI) mid-May.  I've been reading quite a bit on-line about the new CVOs and the 110 engine.  Would I be better to cancel my order and wait until MoCo has fixed the issues with the new motor (heat problems primarily) or continue with the buy.  Also, the dealer reccommended he put on Reinhard exhaust, remap, and SE air filter kit.  This being a CVO SE bike, why doesn't it come with the SE performance components?  I'll be paying enough.  The dealer said he would add these things to the bike for "about a grand".  Is this a reasonable price?  Do I need the whole SE air filter kit, or just the air filter itself?  How does the exhaust sound that it comes with.  I don't want something annoyingly loud, but I like to hear the rumble, and let all around me know I'm there, and it's a Harley.  Will a remap take care of the upgrade, or do I need to have an additional component installed.  I'd appreciate your feed back on this.  I am wondering if this bike is worth the extra money, and if the dealer is giving me a good recommendation.  I'll respond back if there is some question as to what I am talking about.  Thanks!

JJ,

Lets first start off with a, welcome to the site.  It's a great place to ask questions.  I can only give you my opinion of the 07 CVO Ultra. Once I changed the exhaust, air cleaner, and put the pcIII in, I've been very happy with the bike. The best thing is to fix it right out of the gate and it seems as though that has been solving the heating issues. If I had it to do all over again, I would absolutely buy the bike all over again.  I would just do the changes right out of the box and not have put it off as long as I did. That being said if you decide to wait till the problems are solved, the Ultra Classic more than likely will not be available any longer, as this is the second year of this model and history shows that thats usually it. Either way, good luck with your choice.

JJ,
Gasrat pretty much covered it.  I did get mine "right out of the box" with the exhaust/intake mods and did the Screamin Eagle Race Tuner.  I don't regret buying my Ultra one bit, and like Gasrat, would do it again in a heartbeat.  If you don't want to get the Ultra, then you might want to wait, but if everything follows as it has with the CVO's this is the second year of the Ultra CVO, so you probably won't see another one for about 4 years.  Nobody really knows what will be coming out for '08, but with their popularity, and if I were a betting man, I would say there is going to be a bagger of some sort that will be offered.  The Road King should be offered again next year for sure.  Whichever way you decide, welcome to the site, and good luck in your choice.

Thanks for the information.  I am sure I will enjoy the ride.  Couple of other questions I have...is the exhaust on the CVO high flow (compared to that of a stock Ultra)?  Is the CVO exhaust louder, or better sounding than the stock Ultra, and how does it compare with the new SE exhaust (I'm assuming it's not SE, but rather HD "performance"...don't know what the difference is).  Thanks again, you guys are a ton of help, and full of great insight.

Buy it and enjoy if it cooks the motor thats what warrantys are for.  The bikes are so lean from the factory because of EPA guidelines so not sure how the factory can tweak that.

jerjohnson00 ,

Welcome to the site. It's a great place to learn about the CVO's. Don't let the negative posts about the 110 engines scare you off. Have any of them give trouble, of course, but, I haven't had any major problems whatsoever. I think that would be what the majority of people would say. HD is forced to lean the bikes out for EPA concerns. Esp in California. I honestly don't think they have a choice.

As far as the exhaust, they are too quiet in my opinion. I'm like you, I don't want to bust everyone's ear drums, but I do want it to sound like a Harley. I'm running V&H true duals and I'm satisfied with them. I've heard others from this site running Rineharts and they sound good too. It is a different sound than V&H.

As far as getting those componments for a grand, it sounds like a bargain to me. I doubt you could get it done that cheap later. From what I've seen a Screaming Eagle Race Tuner (SERT), dyno time, Rinehart duals, and an AC would cost you $1,500 or more. Those items would make the bike run richer, therefore cooler.

I think you'd love the bike! It's responsive, It's the cadillac of motorcycles in my opinion, and it's different than most other peoples. I don't think you could go wrong.

Good luck and welcome to the site.

JJ, I love mine! I would buy it again in a heartbeat! This is the ulitmate Ultra Classic.
If the dealer was willing to do the modifications mentioned for 'about' a thousand $'s I would jump all over it! In addition I would negeotiate a Power Commander (ECM fuel management) into the equation. This should add about another ~$400. This set up will give you everything that you need for a smooth riding machine. The added benefit is that if your dealer is willing to do these mods, he is willing to stand by the warranty! This is a major benefit. I would get the extended warranty as well, you can always sell it if you sell the bike.
You've described the 'perfect' (IMHO) bike. GO FOR IT!

I THINK 9 OUT OF 10 OR 10 OUT 10 OF US WOULD BUY A SEUC ALL OVER AGAIN.MOST OF US WOULD PUT AIRCLEANER,SOME KIND OF TUNNER,AND PIPES OR MUFFLERS BEFORE IT LEFT THE DEALER.WHEN YOU SPEND YOUR UPGRADE MONEY RIGHT IT WILL BE WELL WORTH IT.YOUR BIKE WILL BE MORE RIDABLE RUN COOLER,AND PUT SMILES ON YOUR FACE ON EVERY RIDE.I WENT WITH D-D PIPES,SE PRO TUNNER,AND AIRCLEANER AND ADDED GHOST PIPE FOR LOOKS AND BALANCE.MY BROTHER JUST PUT D-D SLIP ONS ON HIS AND THAT WORKED OUT GOOD.SO LOOK FOR A SOUND OR LOOKS IN PIPES OR MUFFLERS,PICK A PROGRAMMER FOR YOUR ECM,AND ADD AIRCLEANER  AND ENJOY YOUR RIDE ,ALSO KEEP US POSTED.RIDE SAFE JDO

JJ,
Just to chime back in again...the stock mufflers are not high-flow...in fact they're very restrictive-catalytic equipped mufflers.  Again to satisfy the EPA requirements, which no matter how many years the 110 is out for, can be tweaked out of the machine. They, EPA, are only going to get more restrictive.  As far as sound, I didn't care for the sound of the factory SEUC mufflers at all.  In fact the mufflers that come stock on the regular electra glides sound much better.  I know you won't regret getting the SEUC this year...so far, I've had no problem with mine, afterall it is a Wednesday bike, and am very happy with it.

Welcome jer. Waiting won't help. Probably be worse next year. It's not just CVO's, it's all the '07's. Just a little worse with the 110's. Just do those mods and you won't be disappointed. I would listen to a few pipes before making the decision as to which pipes to use. The other 2 mods your dealer wants to do are OK. The RH pipes are good, but so are many others. You have to live with the sound, so go listen to some. And $1000 for everything is a very fair price. Good luck with your new ride! Hoist! 8)

Again, thanks for the feedback.  This sounds like the way to go, and will more than likely move ahead with it...just have to convince the boss to spend the little extra money for the mods.  ;D  In speaking with the dealer, he also mentioned there is a download they can do for free once.  This download caused the rear cylinder to shut off during idle, to also minimize heat.  What are your thoughts, and experiences with this?

Don't bother, just get the ECM mod done and that won't be a factor. It probably comes with that download by now abyway. Do those 3 things. You'll be happy and so will your bike! Hoist! 8)

This may be obvious, but I thought I would point out that it's not just a download. You have to have them install some kind of tuner such as a powercommanderIII, or racetuner, to tune the bike after the pipes & air cleaner.  The download that they do for the A/C  would not be exactly right with the exhaust also.

The download he was referring to was the recall, that wasn't a recall, but a customer satisfaction or some such nonsense download. It's not a tuning download. He needs the tuning mod no matter what. Hoist! 8)
