The Zen of Ape hangers
« on: April 08, 2007, 09:37:50 PM »

They look cool, scare small children, thrill young women.  But are they comfortable?

Look great on the SERK, couple nice ones on this sight.  Recently saw a set on a RG, a quick passing look, didn't think they would look good on a dresser, miniapes, looked pretty darn good.  Anybody on this site have a glide of any sort with a set, can you post a pic-I just need a closer look?

TheHunter has some on his RG.  Is that what you're looking for?

Thats it.  Nice bike, thanks.

Wonder if they are comfortable, say on a nice long road trip.

You might pm SPIDERMAN, he has them on his new RG too.

One other thing to consider,
If you're talking about an "Electra" glide vs. a "Road" glide, you may want to think long and hard.

The Electra is a fork mounted fairing.  The Road Glide is not.  Therefore, if you mount thise on an ElectraGlide, you'll have to fight a lot of the wind with your arms up in the air.  Just throwing that out there.  Could be a lot of $$ invested on something that could make it very difficult to ride.

Cheers!

Good point.  It stays coolish here in Maine, went for a nice spin this weekend, 38 degrees out.  I dont really mind riding when its a bit cold but was glad to have my hands behind the fairing.

They look real cool :coolblue: But for long trips I hope your shoulder muscles are in good shape.

I must say that my apes are comfortable for me. On my bike I sit WAAAAAYYYY back over the rear...and hang way out on the apes.....notice my seat position. Corbin Hollywood Solo. I actually use the tour pac as my back rest. The Foot boards are a must to get this style of riding on a bike like this. Fixed Fairing helps as well.

I just came back from a recent Florida run. Sarisota to Key West ...... Key West to Orlando and the only thing that needed strechin was my ASS. :confused5: To and from were straight trips. About 9-10 and 10-12 hours with stops to stretch and fill up.

For some reason I refuse to change the seat and every year since 2003...I tuff it out. :coolblue:

For me though, the apes work. And the look compliments the bike.

hope that helps.?

They sure do draw attention, and look good on some bikes.
But how do you do slow speed, lock to lock, tight U turns. with your arms all stretched out like that?

Apes are for looks, nothing else. They arent bad for short distances. If you're worried about comfort, you dont want apes for any distance.

thers APES and then there are APES no set of bars is perfect for everyone. i can run consecutive 700+ mile days with my 10" apes on my SERK but my bro can't put 20 miles on them. you cant tell someone what they dont want..... they need to figure out for themselves what will work and what wont

I agree with naitram.

A bud has a Road King with stock bars an can't stand them. They have his arms to far apart. He went with a drag style bar, road from PA to Myrtle without a single bar complaint.

Another bud road from PA to Myrtle with 18" apes on a lowered softail, no bar complaints.

As for me I've only logged a few 400 miles days with my 20" Apes on 3" risers. I tend to take the bagger because that is why I have it. I find the Apes comfortable. I ride one handed as that bike is a jockey shift......

Apes on Road Glides and Road Kings is pretty popular. Hit the Smoke Out in Salisbury NC in June(?) and you'll see a fair share of Apes on Baggers.
