PIPES AND NO TUNER
« on: November 17, 2024, 04:39:26 PM »

Hey ya'll

I recently purchased a FXSTSSE2.  Everything appears to be stock except seat, grips, (cruise control?) and pipes.. V&H Big Radius 2-into-2.  I can't find a tuner, assuming the previous owner just installed the pipes (no tuner).  Is this going to cause my engine to run lean/hot?  Not a good idea here in San Antonio.  The professional wrenchers/shops around here are mostly hustlers and scam artists, usually a bad experience.  What do you recommend?  Should I just get a tuner and play it safe, and if so, which one?  I have enough power (for now), my goal is for my engine to run cool (as can be with a 110) and efficiently.

Take a plug read and compression test while you are there.

Hi,

It may have a TTS tune, where a new map is written to the oem ecu. I’m not sure how you find out though.

Thanks
Pauly

I would ensure it has a tune to match the pipes before riding it much, as you suggested.  Too bad you didn't get those stock parts, they are obsolete and very hard to come by now!

I am chiming in on another of your threads Sir.

"Back then" in 2007 there were 2 options for flashing the bike for a pipe upgrade (or pipes and aircleaner on non CVO bikes)

You could but an original SERT race tuner dongle , that came with a CD of flash tunes, and sometimes the connecting cables for a laptop also.

OR you could in the US pay the dealer for a one off download for "stage 1". Same tune as in the SERT package. That MAY have been done to your bike.

Trouble is you cannot tell by "looking" at the bike as nothing physical is left on there. You can see the calibration currently in the ECM but of course you need the HD dealer digitech OR an original SERT to do so.

To complicate matters further , you could also use a Supertuner Pro dongle and Software to tune the bike , this replaced the original SERT from 2008

3rd possibility is a TTS tuner has been used on the bike, made by the company that made the "original SERT" for Harley 2001 to 2008.

Dongles can be black for early versions and lurid orange for later. They are supposed to stay "with" the bike , not "on" it, but they often go missing in the transfer of ownership journey.

Another option back then was a "leave on" the bike Power Commander unit. Piggybacked into the wiring harness by the ECM. Easy to see on a Softail.

If so by now it would be troublesome as they double the number of male/female connectors and corrode easily.

I have lost count of the numbers of those units I have now removed to use flash tuners instead

I'm thinking my best option is to buy a Dynojet Power Vision and flash the ECM to my standards.  If anyone knows of a better tuner on the market, please sound off.  And thanks for all your comments.

It is safe to ride as long as you don't try running around at 5500 rpm all day.
How many miles on the bike?  Does it start and idle easily? Any popping or backfiring? What is the fuel mileage and what do the plugs look like?

What is the actual red line meaning when does the rev limiter kick in.  Most tuners set it at like 6200 instead of something like 5600 stock. You can hit rev limiter in first gear once without grenading your motor if it is at normal operating temperature.
Lastly, the dealer can plug in and tell you what tune is in the bike.  Take it to Javelina in Boerne, they may do it for free, or as part of some other work.

I have no Power Vision experience personally. They were popular in Australia with independent Harley shops for a few years.

I have already said I reckon the Power Commanders are now old and chit.

The TTS system well I do have some experience of that up until 8/10 years ago. Not huge in Australia. They made the original SERT stuff for HD up to 2008

The Super Tuner Pro dongles and cables can still be got around the traps , the "used and married" dongles are routinely "divorced" and reused on different bikes.

Supertuner Pro Software easy enough to find still. That's the one I use the most by far as it does 2008 ( 2001 actually) to 2017

I mostly use the Supertuner Pro dongles and Software now , but still use the original SERT stuff on 2001 to 2008 bikes
