117 pistons to clyinderhead compatabilty
« on: February 10, 2025, 08:43:31 AM »

Hi All,

Am in the UK,

I am doing an 110 to 117 upgrade on my 2007 CVO Road King, Have tracked down a set of SE117 cylinders that dont require case boring, but Pistons are not so easy to find, but have found some Keith Black 4.125 pistons, they say for 10.5 to 1 comp.

My cylinderheads have been skimmed 30 thou and have 2.120 inlet valves, I run Andrews 54 cams (Max lift .555).

I have 3 questions

1. Will the piston valve pockets be big enough to clear the valves?
2. will they work with the 07 CVO heads ok?
3. Will 10.5 to 1 comp be ok with those cams or do i need to machine the piston crowns (could i use Cometic MLS gaskets to adjust?)

Any advice would be greatfully received, Thanks.

1- What's the installed height of your 2.120 intake valves ? (Stem protrusion, with the valve on the seat).
2- Valve Pockets should be able to handle upto a 2.160" intake valve.
3- KB piston set 117", with 10.5:1 compression has a 7.2 cc dome, which may NOT work with a CVO 110 cylinder head combustion chamber.
4- If your cylinder bores need to be touched up, you may be out of luck. The cylinders bores, are very thin.

Hi John,

Thanks for the info, the cylinders se117 new,  so come pre honed etc, if I machine off the dome on the pistons, will that take care of the issue with the CVO110 heads?

Thanks.

Cutting , or reducing the domes, depends on the thickness, from the top of the dome to the underside of the piston crown. I won't go less than .200"  thickness.
RE: Your piston bores, size wise, NEED to be compatible, with the finished bore size of the cylinders. NOT all manufacturers call for the same piston to wall clearance. Harley Davidson, uses MAHLE Pistons, in their 117" engines. KB, uses a variety of Piston brands. I would shoot for .003" skirt to wall. If your KB pistons are "Line to Line coated, KB stamps the size of the piston diameter on the wrist pin boss.
