Battery Life
« on: April 05, 2025, 09:39:24 PM »

:confused5: Current battery has been in motorcycle about 4 years. While riding the voltmeter indicates about 13.8-14 volts. When starting it dips to about 10 volts or so then goes back to about 13.8-14 volts. Should wait to replace the first time is does not start right up? One installed is HD OEM agm.

You’ve gotten all the good out of that battery.  They can fail without warning so no need in taking a chance.  Last one I replaced, started up fine with no hesitation, rode for a few miles and stopped to get gas, turned it off, came out of the store and deader than a hammer.

My bikes second battery was the Interstate and I think the part # is GYZ32HL  500 cca.
The tag I put on it was 06/2019. I have always used the HD battery maintainer charger but got sidetracked last fall and forgot to put it on the battery, anyway it died and recharging didn't take so I put in a NAPA as a temporary one  so I could ride the bike home yesterday from my shop .
I will be ordering the Interstate battery tomorrow (Monday) and install it.
There are many options for a battery, get the highest CCA battery you can is my suggestion.

Where I live typically we put the bikes in storage for the winter in early December and get them out again in late March (although my wife & I have ridden in every month during mild winters).

I used to only plug in our batteries during those winter down months and fire them up in the spring no problem and usually got about 4 years of life out of the batteries.  My tech informed me that he plugs in his battery tender after EVERY ride ALL year long and he rides to work and back every day.  He claims to get 7 years out of his battery and says that is the reason.

So about 10 years ago I took his advise to plugged in after every ride all year long and constantly of course through the winter storage period.  I'm on my second battery in 10 years, the first one lasting 5-6 years - not quite the 7 my tech enjoyed.

Therefore I'm wondering how many follow this rule, or only plug in during extended storage periods as I used to?

I should have added to my post... How many years do you usually get out of your battery?

I do the same (battery stays on battery tender when not ridden) and get the same result (+/-) for longevity of battery. I also no longer get H/D branded (OEM) battery and have been using these - Deka ETX30L Battery since.

I have been using the Deka ETX30L and get around 5-6 years service life, always plugged in the battery tender (1Ah) when parked.
I believe the Deka ETX30L is the same as the OEM battery.

I keep mine on an H-D branded charger year around.  The last two batteries I bought died out of the blue while on a trip.  Advance auto parts was my only option (8:30 pm) so I had to get their brand of battery.  Funny thing (or not so funny while in the situation) the second battery died 4 years to nearly the same day on the same trip (Smokies) and had to go to the same Advance auto parts to buy another one.  I’m sure I’d do better with a higher quality battery but I know that the one I’m running now has about 3 years left on it. So I’ll be buying a new one BEFORE I leave for the 2028 trip.  Interstate has worked well in my cars and trucks so I’ll probably go that route.

My bikes go on the tender if they are not going to be ridden for more than a week.  I average 5 years.  I do find my fatboy battery has the shortest life, it only gets ridden a few times a year.  My replacement batteries are always Duracell.

4 to 5 years is good for a motorcycle battery, while riding your voltmeter should be a steady 14.2 reading. Its probably the battery but check for loose cables. Harley regulators are known to fail as well., good to check the charging system.

I am the same way.....just replaced the battery in my '18 SERG over the winter. The battery in my '15 SESG lasted 7 years.

I just replaced the battery in my 2019 Limited, still started the bike, but was cranking slower, so almost 6 years, always plugged into tender when not riding
