I am curious, did your 110 scatter? Had you changed out the lifters at any time or?

I had the same thoughts when it was time for my engine.  I settled on rebuilding the HD 103 only for convenience.  If the S&S crate motor has issues while touring, some dealerships might be hesitant work on it. But at least they know an HD engine.

That may be true or not be true, but that was my thinking.

In any event Jim at Metal Dragon rebuilt it at 83k and it now has 112k with no issues.

From what I have seen hanging around at my local indie shop of S&S quality of late, I would rebuild the Harley motor.

Not knowing the indy experience, or skill, I would call S&S, and feel them out. They are straight shooters, and may even recommend someone in your area. My experience with S&S crate engines has been good. There may be some minor extra work, to make the S&S engine a drop in.

My 110 dropped lifters and I went 117 with all the premium aftermarket parts. About the only original parts are the 2 halves of the casing. Not cheap but I'm very happy. Sorry I don't trust HD to put out a dependable motor.

No, it did not scatter, it was still running fairly well but I could hear a whining noise at idle.

Lifters were replaced along with the top end at 30k…it was still under warranty at the time.

Warranty has expired, hence the thought of going outside The MotoCo for motor replacement.

I failed to mention, my dealer seems to think there are issues with the motor main bearings.

AI makes it sound like S&S is superior to HD.
I do not know anybody personally who runs S&S, so looking here for some discussion.

I have had a S&S 124 HO in my 12 RG for over 50K miles with zero issues and I certainly don’t “baby” my bikes..

Send the 110 engine to a good performance shop. They can build an engine with the right parts to upgrade it to S&S performance levels!

If you go the S&S route, you’ll lose the OEM factor of your CVO. Not a big deal IMO.

I have a crate S&S in one of my bikes and love it. All premium parts right out of the box.

My M8 is now a 124, again all premium parts. But it’s still OEM looking on the outside!

Get in touch of a GOOD builder and discuss you options with them.

The CVO has its own Engine and Transmission color, not on other bikes.  I would build the 110 to a 117.  A good shop can build it to S&S power  levels and reliability.  It will maintain the CVO look.

That could be important on resale.

I agree with Dave. Nothing wrong with the OEM as a platform to start with. All the good parts can be used to improve the reliability and performance. A 113 or 117" 4.375" stroke motor make some of the best twin cam builds all things considered, in my opinion.

91k miles on my 2013 CVO Ultra Classic.  I've never been accused of babying my bike......but I've just been trying to keep up with Alan (SDCVO).  I've had Jim at Metal Dragon (hd-dude on this forum) change the lifters a couple of times.  Stock other than Fulsac header and baffles and a tuner.

I hope I'm not jinx myself but it's been the most reliable Harley that I've ever owned.  And when that time comes, it'll be Jim up there in Hayward, at Metal Dragon doing the rebuild.
