2016 CVO Engines Issues
« on: October 18, 2025, 08:43:42 PM »

I am new to the forum, and I need some suggestions and advice on my problem with my 2016 FLHTKSE. I bought the bike new and have 45,000 miles. On a recent trip 850 mile from home, I started hearing a noise from the engine like a lifter issue. I took the bike to a dealer, and they found metal particles on the cam sensor. I am having the bike shipped back home. No sure when I will get the bike back This is a second time I have had engine issues.  2020 I had a problem with the engine (28000 miles) and a lifter failed and took out the cam. I have had no issues engine wise since. At this point I don't know what to do. Order a box engine or have the engine overhauled. When I talked with different shops the I have been advised replace it with a S&S engine. Go to a 117 or Milwaukee 8. I really like the bike, and I plan on keeping it! I am not a fan of the new bikes!

Well metal particles on the sensor are a serious concern. Have you had them check the oil and the
Oil filter for metal fragments also?

No I haven't had the oil or filter checked. I will have all that done once I get the bike back to my dealer in Tennessee. If they do find oil in these two areas my concern is how to proceed from there. Being close to 50,000 miles go ahead have a full overhaul done? Do upgrade motors to a 117 or a S&S. This is my first Harley I have experienced engine issue!

Wait till they figure out what happened inside the motor. On a 9 year old bike with 50k miles on it, if a tear down and rebuild is necessary, you can make your existing motor bullet proof with a good engine builder. Based on what you’re describing, you had a lifter failure. A replacement crate motor would be way more expensive.

I agree.

Also, try and figure out who you want to do the rebuild or replacement with now. Then have the bike shipped directly to them to reduce unnecessary shipping expenses.

You may want to consider calling Steve over at Full Sac and see if he knows of any good builders.

Best of luck in getting things sorted and you are back on the road again.

Just overhaul what you have. Full engine out overhaul with a full oil system cleaning including the oil pan and oil cooler(s) replaced. After the overhaul replace the lifters at 20k intervals.

I agree with Don, overhaul.  Clean it well, replace pan and cooler.  The 110 engines are notorious for having lifters fail.
