Odometer Issues

I stated elsewhere that the odometer on my new SERK (less than 500 miles) started going wacky. It shows all LLLLLL's instead of miles when you turn the ignition on, then eventually shows the mileage. The Tech just told me that no codes show up as trouble at all, and he thinks the PC III is causing this. Does this make sense to anyone? If it's not possible that the PC III could cause this, does anyone know what would? I told him not to worry about changing it for now, but would like to get to the bottom of the cause, before making waves over there! Any info on this would be helpful and appreciated! Thanks. Doubt the PCIII would do this, Unplug the PCIII and see if it still does it?

Don't think so. So far, the only indication left behind by the PCIII is when I leave the battery attached to it and turn on the ignition. This throws a P1004 trouble code. It will go away, but takes 50 start cycles.

Other than that, I have not seen any traces of the PCIII on the bike.

Thanks Jim, that's what i thought, but thought I'd ask if there's some kind of unusual feedback from the PC. They have my bike apart for the starter/clutch hub replacement. I'll wait until I get it back and start checking. I knew they'd find a reason to blame something on the PC. I'll have to remove it to get the Speedo replaced, if it still does it after the PC's disconnected.

Chief, he told me there's no trouble code at all. These LLLLL's are something they've never seen and doesn't throw a code. Why not blame the PC!

It's stupid to have to play games with them to get things fixed. FTF and FTW!!! ;) Hoist! 8)

Of course they're going to blame it. That's the number one rule in diagnosing any problem, blame the other guy's stuff.

You got that right Chief! I'll have to unplug it and make sure there's no way it was the PC. Then ride back there, and a block away, remove the PC. Then get the speedo replaced, and a bock away, reinstall it. BS, but by installing the PC, I kinda knew what I was getting into anyway. Play their silly games! ;) Hoist! 8)

Do you think if you had the sert intead of the pc, they would still be playing their little games, or do you think that since the sert is a HD product, it would be different?

Probably not. They'd have to admit that the ECM wouldn't cause this. I confirmed that the PC, due to it's architecture and connection location can not cause this issue. So I'll play the game when I get some time to deal with it. Right now, I just want the starter problem fixed, and get the bike back before York. Hoist! 8).

Harley part or not,, you put a sert on your bike and it imediatly voids your warrantee.

every piece of literature Harley has about the sert tells you this.  they have their own asses covered a few times on that.

With all due respect, I disagree. No sense in arguing about it as I'm basing my answer on having bought 5 bikes in the past 6 years from my dealer EVERYONE with a SERT and they ALWAYS covered me under warranty.

B;
Its all up to the dealer. You've got a good one that is mod friendly. There are the hard asses out there that follow the letter of the law and use every disclaimer in the book to prevent them from doing what's right. If it were up to the MOCO and they have the disclaimers they will most likely use them. >:(

my dealer told me they could not do that because you can never remove all traces of the sert from your ecm after its been installed. thats why they recomended I go with the PCIII.  they installed it and told me they would stand by the warrantee..  never heard of anyone getting anything cover after haviong a sert.  your the first.  GOOD FOR YOU.

and I mean that sincerely. :apple:

The sert and pc thing seem so dealer dependent, mine recommends PC but cant guarantee what another dealer will cover if you have a breakdown on the road, and that is what these touring bikes are all about, right, road trips.  Seems like, if you have a breakdown while far from home, you might have a better chance if you have a dealer installed sert, but I have no idea what the realty is out there.  You guys are really so knowledgeable and experienced, with this kind of differing opinion amongst those in the know, there may not be a right answer here.

Just wondering, anybody ever had warranty coveraged denied while on the road due to a sert or pc? (im new to this forum writing thing, should I have made this new subject? apologies to Hoist).

You're OK here. Hijacking a thread whether intentional or not is just the way it goes. Hoist will bring us back in line when he figures out why his odo went south.
