ESS wiring harness
« on: April 20, 2026, 01:23:06 PM »

I’m going to upgrade my stereo, head unit and add an amp, what do you do with the ESS harness?
If I just remove it what model bike do I need to tell them I have to get the right harness with the new head unit?
I probably gonna buy a soundstream from note cycles, but every time I tell them I have an 04 SEEG they say not compatible.
Suggestions?
Also what is a good 2 channel amp that won’t break the bank.
I have hawg wired 4ohm speakers and don’t want to change them if I don’t have to.

I'm a big fan of Volunteer Audio. You can call and talk at length with the sales or tech department. They also have a boatload of videos on you tube.

If you’re replacing the head unit, virtually any after market amp will work since the two would connect via RCA cables. You will have to run high quality power and ground cables to the battery. From there, I would just run new high quality speaker wire to the fairing speakers from the amp.  The ESS comes into play with handlebar controls.  I used a Schoshe steering wheel control module that plugged directly into the ESS.  Soundstream is an excellent choice!  I am running their 4-channel amp (2) Alpine Type R 6.5” in the fairing and replaced the gloveboxes with speaker pods and (2) Alpine Type R  6.5” in the lowers.  I’ve been running this system for a long time and it still sounds great.

So on a goof I unplugged the ESS only from the factory radio, the handlebar controls still worked, volume up/down, change source etc. obviously there was no sound.
My question is would it not work if I completely remove the ESS harness and tell them I need the radio with a harness for a electri glide classic?

So I’m starting to recall now (getting old is hell🤣). But with your stock HU there are two harnesses.  One for handlebar controls and another for the amp attached to the HU (ESS?). You don’t have to remove that one, just push it aside.  I believe you could just use the other one with a correct harness but you will still need to unplug the speakers from the harness and run them directly from the amp.

I’m functionally illiterate when it comes to automotive audio, so I don’t have to worry about forgetting, I never knew it.
If it were mechanical or hydraulic or even home electrical I could probably figure it out myself but I’m lost when it comes to stereo

Copied from one of my older posts:

I run the following in my SEEG
Sony DSX - M80 (marine head unit) you can customize the LED color to match your dash lights
4- 6.5” Alpine Type R (replaced the glove boxes with speaker pods)
Soundstream PN4.520D 1040W 4 Ch Class D Picasso Series Car Compact Amplifier
Get you a Schoshe steering wheel control so all your thumb controls on your handlebars will work

A 2004 EG harness should work.  You’ve got this…harness attached to new head unit (instructions will come with it), steering wheel control module (to make thumb controls work), thick power and ground from battery to amp, RCA cables and remote wire from head unit to amp, speaker wires from amp to speakers. Done
