Main shaft seal and bearing race
« on: Yesterday at 11:27:57 AM »

Has anyone encountered a main shaft bearing race that was pushed all the way to the seal?
Also, are you using the specific tools to remove and replace seal and bearing race or what?
Looking at mine, it looks like I may have to either
A( find a collar that will clamp on the outside of the race or
B( weld a nut on either side of the race to pull it
Any suggestions appreciated

It happens. The race will walk.  I've taken an angle grinder and carefully created a notch to get the puller on or (my preferred option) taken an angle grinder and put a notch in line with the shaft (rather than across it for the puller) to make it really thin.  Then split it with a chisel.  Then it just pulls off with your hand.  I was never precious enough with a torch to get just the race hot enough to expand and slide off.

Oh yeah, there are kits (Baker and others) that replace that bearing and race combination with a larger ID bearing; so no more race.  Doing that takes a different seal though.  Be sure you don't use the new bearing and old seal.

The seal is my actual problem. I’m pretty sure that the race walked over into it and started chewing up the seal.
I could probably live with a little bit of oil but it’s leaking but my bike has never leaked oil before and I’m about to go on a 10,000 mile trip.
How about putting the seal and the race back on? Do you have or use the specialty tools or just make do?
