He put very little tape on it, and it leaked from day one, so I suspect it must have come from the factory like that.....

Anyone know how long it takes the MoCo to ship new engines?

Jim

Getting VIN stampings done apparently isn't a "next day" procedure.  The fastest turn around I personally have ever witnessed was just short of three three weeks.  Though that was a domestic ship.

Yup, I guessed they wouldn't attach much urgency to it 2L  :(

I think I'll see what they propose, and then perhaps suggest we effect a temporary repair that will let me use the bike while waiting....

Sounds like a "ride-able Plan B" would be ideal.  If they'd do it.  Can very easily see them saying no though.  Or at least requiring a waiver of some kind that if it blows the plug, loses the oil and trashes the motor while being ridden it's not on them to fix it.

Bad deal all the way around Jim.  Best of luck on getting it sorted and getting new bits fast.  Sucks to lose part of the riding season to such a major malfunction.

If they say, OK, new engine it is, I can't see that I'd even have to tell them about the temporary repair, 2L.   I'd just say I'm not having all that moneys worth sitting here to get damaged while we wait for weeks for the engine - deliver it to my place, and you can collect it when you have the parts.  Then I'd do my repair and ride on....

Jim,
Sorry to hear about the cracked case.  That's gotta suck...hopefully, the new engine will arrive in time to salvage your riding season.  I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Thanks Charlie.

The MoCo (as I expected!) are standing firm and insisting no new engine, just replacement crankcases.  I will be discussing this further with them.... ;) Of course it needs either way to be VIN stamped and shipped from the US, so we're looking at at least a month.....   The MoCo are at least offering to ship an Ultra Classic to the dealer for me to use meanwhile.

Apparently the dealer managed to extract some sort of artefact from the crack today - a casting flaw I guess.

Jim

I'll let you know how we get on!

Jim,

At the least you get an  Ultra loaner bike to ride while yours is being repaired.  It would have been risky to ride yours in that condition.  Best of luck on getting your bike fixed and hope you can get back to riding it soon.

First time I have heard of this problem.

Thanks Iski - yes, a one off, just typical of my luck, I think!

Update to this.

Went down to the dealership this morning to meet with HD rep, who was there today.  He's a nice guy, and has promised to keep on the case (no pun intended) to ensure that the new crankcases come from the US as soon as possible.  He estimates 3-4 weeks, so it will be tight for time for my vacation..... but here's hoping.

The dealership showed me the piece of metal that fell out the crack - it was weird!  Wish I'd had my camera with me to take a photo.... If you can imagine a cross section through the casting at that point, that was what it looked like!  About an inch long, and 25 thou or so thick, threads on the inside surface, black paint on the outside. Looked for all the world as if it been machined out - parallel sides, smooth.  Confirms a casting fault of course, not down to anything done during the assembly or otherwise of the bike, which would have created just one crack, not this slice.

The really silly thing is that on a 06 and earlier motor, 15 minutes would have fixed it, as the oil filter housing was bolt on then, not part of the casting...  :(

On the positive side, it has made me get the Sporty out and get its annual test done!

Jim,
Glad to hear that they're working it out for you.  The fact that they're giving you an Ultra for a loaner is great.  At least you won't be without a touring rig in case your Jester's not ready for your vacation.  So that's not too bad.  Unfortunately, the loaner's not yours so you can't do anything to it to satisfy your OCD. :(  Keep us updated on the progress...here's hoping to a speedy "recovery".

Very strange set of circumstances Jim.  Very glad they're offering the loaner bike to ride in the interim.  You wrote, however, that it also is yet to be delivered to the dealer; is that right?  If so how long before you actually have the loaner in hand?

Like you I'd have completely expected them to swap cases rather than complete engines.  Though it's a policy rather than a cash thing for HDI.  By the time they pay the dealership to do all the extra work plus supply the cases their outlay likely won't be all that much less than if they'd supplied a short engine.

They tell me the loaner will arrive with the dealer (who will deliver it to me) late next week, 2L.  Apparently it has a "minor electrical fault" that the dealer will rectify.  The fault will, I'll bet from the description, be the same one as my bike had - a dud connection in the Molex connector under the fairing that deals with the right hand control set, as, just as with mine, pressing the start button does nothing.

I'll take my camera next trip to the dealers and take a couple of pix of the "slice" of casting - it is the most bizarre artefact!

End deal is that they will do their best to ensure that my bike is fixed ASAP, I have the loaner for the period till it is, they'll up the warranty on my bike to 4 years, and if it develops a major fault after the rebuild, that can be attributed to the rebuild, they will supply an engine, no quibbling....

All of which seems fair to me, though I'd rather it hadn't happened at all.....

I may still attempt the temporary epoxy repair, so that I can at least be able to run the bike enough to get the TMax/AT, exhaust, and A/C installed, so that when they put it all back together, I don't have to take all that apart again immediately afterwards!

Good luck with it all Jim.  Has to carry a bit of frustration with it even though they are making it right.  Hope the vacation plans you'd mentioned don't get disturbed.
