Air suspension gauge bracket build
« on: April 21, 2007, 11:10:56 AM »

I wanted a bracket to hold a gauge for my air suspension. I looked around the web for one and didn't have much luck. Those that I found did not warrant the cost or simply did not suit my needs. So I decided to make one myself.

I intened on using the rocker box bolts to mount the bracket as this lent itself to the simplest install. I had a bracket here for an Evo rocker box bolt spread however this is to narrow for a Twin Cam. So off to the garage I went.

This is what I started with. A piece of thick paper for my template, my calipers, a piece of aluminum and the Evo bracket.

Transferring the Evo bracket to the paper making the necessary changes for the Twin Cam mounts.

Cutting the aluminum down to the approximate size. I have a Milwaukee metal skill saw that kicks butt for stuff like this.

*** Note here. I wouldn't cut the aluminum first next time as it made it harder to clamp the piece in the vise***

I used a boring bar here to achieve my two different hole diameters.

A quick polish along with a set screw to hold the gauge in. The Autometer gauge is not the same OD as the Legends gauge that came with the cup. Should I make another one I would have the gauge on hand and use the measurements from it over the existing bracket. This would make for a closer and cleaner fit.

Man, I would love to be able to do that, workin with metal and big time power tools, lathes and stuff. My bud sells CNC machines in the midwest, I think the name is Morris Midwest, anyway, he's always toolin something up from the old shop. Whatever he makes for his scoot I tell him to make one for me too!  :2vrolijk_21:

Again should I make another one I would shorten up the distance that the bracket sits out. The second one would be easier than the first as I now have a working template and an idea of what I like and dislike. I may try mounting this bracket on the other side of the motor as the increased length may clear the tank and cylinders.

I only have a few manual machines. CNC would be the cats meow. I'm still learning how to use the right tooling for the job. :2vrolijk_21:

What type of air suspension do you have? Stock or aftermarket? I might be checking that out myself, its a hassle to take off the bag and get out the pump and check.

The short answer is aftermarket.

I had the early version of the Legends on my bike until it failed. I don't blame Legends as it was their first version using converted OEM shocks. I just have no desire to shell out the current asking price.

So I made an air system based on all of the various systems short comings and accomplishments. I have the first set on my bike and have been very pleased with it so far. I'm duplicating a second setup for a buddy so he can tell me what he thinks. AND I have a third setup to make for another Buddy. Once these guys try it out and tell me that they think I'll post a thread on what I did. This isn't rocket science and most people don't need chrome and billet shocks hidden behind a pair of saddle bags.
