Picking Serk up Friday, Now the questions Start!
« on: April 24, 2007, 12:07:34 AM »

Had the dealer hang on to my bike untill the roads here were clear of sand and salt . I will be picking it up Friday and riding it home, a trip of about 100 miles. After all I;ve been reading here. I'ma bit apprehensive about riding it stock, but I would like to break it in before doing any mods to it. Planning on putting on Supertrapp SE's slip ons, PC111 and HD-800 Ac on  from fuelmoto at 1K Miles. I haven't looked at it enough to know if it has those flapper valves on it or not. If so, will I be able to use the slip on's, can I run it witjout the PC111? Can The HD-800 AC filyer be ordered and installed in the round Serk Air cleaner without other mods? Can't wait to ride, but intimidated by all of there potential problems.

Hoist, being a coward, I purchased the 7 year warranty, but I am not wanting to test it, at least in the 1st year. Hopefully your bike is back in your hands by now. Great looking ride you have there, and I would be really pleased to hear that your problems with yours are behind you !

Cheers,  Al

Al,
Good luck on the ride.  I think we all pretty much know what we're getting into with the HDs.  Some good, some better than others, some lemmons.  Picked my B&O Jester up on 11 Apr and haven't been on it since.  Hospital stay, other medical issues - but the riding season is just getting into full swing here.
You'll enjoy it!  Ride safe.

Al,
Good luck and congrats on getting ready to pick up your SERK.  I went out of the box with the exhaust mods, SERT, and air cleaner.  I don't regret doing it.  I never rode a mile stock on my machine.  They loaded map 84 and that worked well untill I had it dyno'd at my 1K service.  So far everything has worked great...not impressed with the gas mileage, 30-32, depending on how hard I get on it, but still glad I did it the way I did.

I never understood the idea of riding it stock for 1K miles, then doing mods. Makes more sense to tune it properly right out of the gate, so the break in miles will be cooler on the motor. Seems even more important to do it early now than in years past as EPA restrictions get tougher and tougher.

Congrats.  I drove mine out the door with slip-on's hi-flo ac and "flash".  It ran ok, not great, and sounded not so good for around 1k miles.  I switched to a RH 2-1 and sert.  With a dyno tune the bike runs really good and strong over 2600 ( alittle sluggish down low, new cams will tighten that up I am sure) and sounds fine.  So far so good.  No warranty.

I have owned several HD's and never "broke" them in before mods...I did break them in though.  The 1st 50-100 miles I rode real easy, not any wot throttle nor sustained high rpm.  Always warm it up before riding. The next 200-500 miles I did not exceed sustained rpm of 3500 or so and lots of shifting,  then I started to ride it like I stole it.
Good luck with whatever you choose.

Good luck with your new ride Al! If you're not planning any other mods, besides what you've described. The W.....ty can be your friend. Especially if you have a good arrangement with your dealer. The mods you're doing will allow your bike to operate normally. There's really no reason to wait until 1K mi. It needs them ASAP. Breaking it in lean, or ridinig it after break-in lean, makes no difference. Lean is lean.

I'm probably picking my bike up today and hope that the problem stays behind me. Thanks. You're gonna have a restless week, looking forward to finally getting it. Can't wait for your pics!

Al,

Congrats on getting your bike.  You must be excited.   :bananarock:

I will echo everyone else here, if you have mods in mind that you know your going to make, you just as well make them sooner rather than later.  If for no other reason than if you wait, you will lose a week or so of prime riding time while it is back in the shop getting all the work done.  I did the 500 mile break in on mine stock and then had my mods done.  The only benefit of doing it that way is I have a much stronger appreciation for how much better the bike runs now, than it did before.

At the end of the day, you have to do what makes you feel the most comfortable.  If you want to get the mods done now, do it.  If you want to get out and ride (which you've probably been waiting a long time to get to do) then ride it and do your mods later.  Its all good!   :pineapple:  :pepper:  She's your baby, you raiser her how you want.

Ride safe Brother, and we expect to see some pictures by Monday.

I hear plenty of you guys discussing the 7 year warranty.  The most a dealer will give you in the UK is 1 year HD warranty, 1 year dealer warranty and after that you wait until the 2years are up, you put the bike in for an 80 point check by HD to say whether they will allow another year.
It's pretty scandalous really.

On top of that the price in England for the SERK is equivalent to $39000.  What a rip-off but the problem with us, I suppose we all wanna look the part, live the lifestyle and we all have visions of driving route 66 with Peter Fonda.  That bloody movie has a lot to answer for.
I wouldn't have a jap bike given yet they are great runners with little problems, why am I going this route again.  I'm actually quite a logical guy who comes from Yorkshire so I'm carefull with my money then along comes the MoCo and I'm gone man.
Blah blah blah - rant over.  What's the saying "if you need to ask, you wouldn't understand"

As far as the warranty Question goes for MODS. IF your Mods are done before your bike is delivered then your Dealer is responsible for your warranty (keep your paper work).

If you Do the mods yourself latter and then have to take it to any other HD Dealer  you may or may not run into trouble depending on the problem.

It's your bike do what you want  :2vrolijk_21: The money you spend for the extra warranty would be better spent on chrome or fuel, Who knows if you are still going to be ridding seven years from now or What bike you will be on  ;D

Thanks for the kind words guys. Actually, I would prefer to do the mods prior to driving it, but the parts are 3 weeks away. >:(

Smiler, hopefully your ride will suddenly appear ! :) Strange warranty situation over there, :o but then again maybe they have got a good idea how you Brits put thier bikes through the paces ! ;D

Hoist ,glad to hear your going to get her back on the pavement again.

Serkus,

I put about 1,000 miles on the SE Ultra before adding Rineharts, SERT, and Stage 1.  I like knowing the before/after aspect.  Ran better - like a different bike after these mods and they also cooled it down considerably.

Have fun riding!

Congrats on the SERK.  Keeping it stock here until 1K.  After many H-D's, many years, no longer feel the need to go out and make the bike loud or give me more performance than already present.  Bought the thing to cruise/tour.  I mean really, how often am I going to take the thing above 100mph.  Recent magazine tests on the 96" show only marginal gains, and that at the high end of the RPMs... where few ride.  Besides, the new stock exhaust note, while not the most impressive at idle, is quite exotic under load and at cruise... low and deep.  Also probably placing the Supertrapp SE's.  Reviews very favorable, and the FI adjusts to it nicely without modification.

You have already made the decision to ride it - as is - home before mods.  Don't second guess your decisions.  You've made em, and just enjoy your bike.  I decided to ride my bike for the first 1000 miles before mods.  Sorry I did it that way now, but you know hind site is always 20/20, and my story is not going to be the same as your story.  Do what you want, enjoy the heck out of your bike - it is a great bike!  Congratulations on the bike.   :cherry:

Congrats on the new bike Al - great choice.
Got mine with the pipes, SERT & filter fitted. There was no point
waiting for 1000 miles that happened in the first week. There is no doubt
they are a great ride - seemless power, radial tyres get it handling real
sweet and if it is as reliable as the old FLSTC I will be a happy camper for
years to come.
Just think of the bargain you are getting as well. RRP in Australia is US$47,500

Good luck & safe riding
