ecm
« on: April 25, 2007, 07:17:28 PM »

would anyone know why the ecm would go bad?
my tuner took off the power commander, and installed the race tuner.
he said the dyno tuning was going fine, he had ran it through 2 different loads, and on the last one, the ecm starting failing to communicate with the icm. or something like that. lol.
seriously, i am getting a little frustrated now.
does the whole ecm need to be changed?
he is waiting for a call back from hd tech.
he was actually on line with them while my bike was hooked up to the computer.
they know everything. how many miles are on the bike and even all the error codes no matter when they were cleared.
hopefully they will call back with some good news.
has anyone had to relace the ecm??
how much??
thanks in advance.

Hey Lou, if they're selling you a SERT and now telling you to buy a new ECM, get the bike out of there and get the TMAT! It'll be about the same price as those 2 items, and you won't need Dyno time on top of it. Hoist! 8)

The TMAT is a an aftermarket replacement ECM that also includes Automatic Tuning thru Closed Loop O2 sensors provided with it. You'd weld "bungs" in your head pipes to accept these sensors. You'd remove the factory ECM completely and use this on its place. Rhino seems to be the resident expert on this. You might want to ask him for advice. I'm still using the factory ECM, but not sure for how much longer. Since this device will be set up as close to the way your bike's set up, and it Auto Tunes from there, you won't have to pay extra for Dyno Tuning, like you will after you replace your ECM and have the SERT installed. I think, overall, it will be less expensive and you'll have a better system. It's sold through Zippers. Hoist! 8)

King, that is a ThunderMax which is a ECM made by Zippers and the AT stand for auto-tune which you can buy with the ecm and it can tune itself.  Lots of threads about this.

I can almost guaranty that any dealer around here will tell you not to use it. I don't know of a good HD dealer for tuning needs around here. Most of them sub out the tuning. Try contacting Rhino or DCFIREMANN here. They both have lots of knowledge on the TMAT. You don't need your tuner for it. That's the beauty. That's why the dealer doesn't like it! Hoist! 8)

harley tech support told the mech how to reset the ecu back to the facory settings.
it worked until he tried to download the race tuner software.
they are trying to get a new ecu under warranty.
won't find out until monday.

finally got my bike back from the dealer.
i did not need an ecm.
apparently the battery voltage was too low for the ecm to accept the download from the race tuner.
is it true?? i don't know.
why it took so long to dignose? i don't know.
what i do know is that the bike performs much better with the race tuner then the power commander.
the final net gains on the dyno for max torque and hp were minimal, but the torque gains throughout the rpm range was phenomenal!!
i picked up as much as 10#'s of torque at specific Rpm's.
it comes in earlier and stay's in longer.
overall, i am very satisfied with the race tuner, and if you plan on keeping your bike would recommend it over the pc any day.
i will keep the pc however if i ever decide to get a new scoot.
anyway, jmho.

Congrats. I would suspect your results come from the quality of the tune, and not the quality of the device. Garbage in = garbage out.

that is not true.
the pc is 2 dimensional and the sert is three dimensional.
the sert lets you dyno the bike under different loads.
the ecm recognizes these loads and adjust the bike accordingly.
most tuners dyno the bike with the pc under no load.
that produces high dyno numbers. unfortunately riding on the street is totally different. especially with a windshield and some luggage.
i can't really explain it.
the name of the shop is Jim moroneys cycle. call and ask for dyno George he can explain it better. 845-564-5400

I must admit, Rhino had convinced me to go for the TMAT, went down to the dealership yesterday, they had never heard of Zippers and will only fit the V&H fueler - what the hell is one of those - has anyone got one and do they work.  The Tech stated there isn't a problem with the 110 overheating (I didn't dare share this website with him) because the MoCo have designed this super engine which has built in sensors which spray oil over the inside of the engine to cool it off but not many people know of this - his words not mine.

This could almost be a thread in itself, in fact.........

It sounds to me like someone wanted to sell you a SERT, and started making some pretty wild claims, most of which are total nonsense.

When tuning a SERT or PC, proper tuning requires running the bike at different loads. This is why Dynojet, the maker of Power Commander, makes the DJ-250 load cell dynamometer. This dyno allow an operator to set a steady speed, regardless of throttle posistion, allowing the tuner to tune at any load he chooses.

Like I said, someone is feeding you some bull with statements like
Quote
most tuners dyno the bike with the pc under no load.

I'm not jumping on you, but it is amazing how much dis-information is spewed about in order to sell one product over another.
