Goo
« on: April 27, 2007, 10:25:37 AM »

When I bought my serk and was giving it its 1st bath, I noticed the adhesive that is between the dash panel and gasket was oozing out, smearing the tank...I picked and wiped with wd40 for and hour or two cursing the "MoCo".

As I was installing a wiring harness for my fairing yesterday, I lifted the dash panel and the silicone(?) adhesive holding the gasket to the dash was smeared everwhere.  What a blinkin mess.  Can't these idiots who bulid these things do any effin thing right?!  The labor issues must have been apparent when the dh was assembling these bikes...

The wify's dyna dash adhesive dried up, cracked up and fell off.  They outta be ashamed of the QA of thier product...

Does anyone else have oozing rtv between the tank gasket and dash panel and if you do, what did you do to clean up the mess?   Thanks for the rant

Same thing on mine.  I haven't done anything about it yet because I don't want to make it worse.  I too am looking for a way to clean it up without smearing it all over the tank.  -JDUB

WD40 sprayed onto a microfiber towel(s) worked pretty good. It smears it around and then you then have to re-wax afterwards.

It is just a messy friggin job.  If the "MoCo" can't even get something this simple right, have mercy on us who only have the standard warranty... :-p

If it's the stuff I'm thinking of, it is the same non-drying stuff they use to hold the gasket strip around the edge of the inner fairing on the batwing bikes. Real sticky stuff. I've never had a problem with it getting on anything else, but a formed lip seal would be a better option than the straight channel stuff they use to wrap the edges with. It never wants to stay on when the outer fairing comes off. You always have to push it around a bit to get everything back in place.

I wonder if using something else to adhere the rubber gasket would be a better option.

I noticed this 'line' of at-the-time unknown substance on three of the four SERKs that I eyeballed on different dealer's floors and one that a friend of mine purchased.
The bike I bought has not (as of yet) exhibited this-----BUT, my bike came with the wrong cover(there was a 2003 100th Aniversary 'SMALL'  cover in a bag (with the same logo) in my saddlebag, and the left saddlebag's red reflector was missing!!! No evidence (PSA adhesive residue) that it was ever attached either.
Quite a bit of unwiped polish residue as well, and a non-clearance problem with the right saddlebag and painted filler strip. This was fairly easily corrected by me with adjustment of several mounting bolts, but I couldn't help but think at the time that I shouldn't have needed to be doing this as I paid that dealer prep fee.
These things noticed after the bike was delivered to my residence---weather was too wet and cold to ride it home.
Mostly silence from the dealer's staff when told about these 'issues', and to their credit, I have been called and told that the correct cover and replacement reflectors are waiting to be picked up.
I was under the impression that the CVO bikes were given a lot more scrutiny both during and after assembly wrt details. Makes me wonder what the 'regular' bikes have overlooked or omitted on them. Makes me wonder what things INSIDE the bike may have been shortchanged, etc., and it sure makes me skeptical about the competency of any future service I might be having done there.
You better believe I personally checked all fluids before taking my first spin and tire/shock air pressure.
This from a dealership that bragged quite a bit about all their GOLDEN Bar and Shield awards for exemplary customer service!

Stuff like this:

I had to reposition one of the muffler heat shields and the left top pipe heat shield.

The pipe shield still doesn't look right, gaps at the bottom, I'll try to get it replaced.

All the exhaust clamps were "showing", not a good thing.  I rotated them around to hide the bolts.

Handlebars were off center in the clamps, the knurled part was visible.

Had a big ol piece of shrinkwrap stuck to the front of the oil tank, a real bear to get it out of there.

I had to buy the tool to adjust the rear shocks preload, it's not expensive but if they offer adjustable shocks then the tool should be included.  They must be taking notes from Honda on that one. :nervous:

On the positive side, it runs good, doesn't burn oil and the mufflers are getting a deeper sound with time.

I just removed it from mine.  Brake cleaner on a soft cloth works great.  I also had to readjust the right saddlebag for clearance.  These bikes are built from scratch two a day by a single person.  The rest of the bikes are built on an assembly line so a person only does a few tasks but does them well and if there is an issue, they know who put that part on.
Its two different school's of thought.  I saw the documentary that showed all of the extra QC done on CVO, but how could this get out?
My dealer told me a Blue SERK came in that did not have the second stage blue paint on the swingarm, How could that get put together and shipped?

I would be super careful using brake cleaner on paint. Wouldn't want to drip on the silver motor and stain it.It stains real easy. And not real sure of its long term effects on clear coat. My .02  Later,Q

I was wondering about that also. Everything I'd heard and read said to keep brake cleaner away from painted parts. :nixweiss:

Since it is goo, I'd try Goo Gone.  I keep a bottle around the house and use it for all kinds of goo problems - goo left behind by stickers, wrappers, etc.  It might work on Harley goo too!

It put it on a rag and carefully wiped the chrome.  I didn't spray it on at all.  I have never had an issue with it.  The SERK motor is black and I use the brake cleaner to remove the chrome polish that gets on the black parts.

Ok, gotcha now. It wasn't used on painted parts then. I have used it on the motor also to remove grease and oil, but I was thinking you were using this on painted parts and I believe it says on the can to not get it on painted parts.

these bikes are all put together by a two person crew from start to finish.  just got to watch it last week.  the parts are all lined up for them,  supposedly already quality checked.  they just bolt everything on and keep pushing the bike down the line.

my serk also has the goo starting to ooze out the right side of the consol.  I think the sun beating on it heated it up :nixweiss:   but I also have goo gone,, and plan on trying it.
