Rear Cylinder Head leak
« on: April 27, 2007, 02:36:56 PM »

Well at 5k I had the front cylinder leaking, now at 11k I have the rear leaking.   Goes in Tuesday for a fix.   They think it maybe a flaw in the castings as they have seen this issue already.  Doesn't seem to be leaking compression just the oil return.

Grrrr...

Ohh and the heated handgrips arent working either ... Went to show them to someone and turned them on only to find they arent working go figure.

Mine has been in the shop 2 weeks now to fix a breather bolt that was stripped out (I have NO idea how that happened since I've never had them out - maybe done at factory?) and new heated handlegrips. 2 weeks??
I'm being told the reason they are taking so long is that the heated grips that came with the bike are different than the ones they sell at the dealership.... huh??? I'm not sure if they are blowing smoke up my a$$ or what. Has anyone heard anything like this that have had their factory heated grips replaced? (sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread)

Harry, did they do both heads the first time? Or are you bringing it it now for the first time. Do you think it's the gasket issue, and the new gasket will resolve it? Can you use Cometics with stock heads and pistons instead? This sounds like it's getting epidemic on earlier '07 110" engines to me. When did the gasket change? Good luck with them, and I hope they fix it fast for you. It helps if you know someone! ::) Hoist! 8)

I just have my rear head replaced on my '06 CUSE.  6,600 miles.  It was just seeping a little oil from behind the plug.  Seeping out on to the head just enough to discolor the top of the head before drying up.  There was a flaw in the head.  Apparently when they drilled a hole for one of the bolts they drilled it too deep and it went through the head then seeped a little oil from around the bolt.  Oh well, it's fixed now with a shiney new head and running good.

Glad they fixed it for you! How long were you down for repair?

Have an appointment for Tuesday.  They made mention of some kind of cast issue that could be involved, but who knows till they pull it.  My fight is going to be if there is an issue with the casting to get them to do both of them and order me new to be sure this doesnt happen again.

We will see shortly,

The bike is back home and have about 300 miles on it since the work was done.

The rear head gasket was blown and needed to be replaced.   They clearanced the rocker boxes the front was almost done as it had worn a large gap into the rockerbox all on its own.   When they were in there they found that the rings needed to be replaced and the rear cylinder needed a ball honing some small scratches in the cylinder, nothing you would get your nail caught on but enough you could see the trend.   I went and bought new rings since the dealer didn't have them I had to drive 2 hours each way to get a set to get the bike back on the road for the weekend.

They also found a broken flange on the rineharts, at first they made mention of this to me then realized they were the only ones to touch the bike and said we replaced it cause it was broke.   Good enough it was taken care of.

Have had to retune the front cylinder a bit due to the pressure change and it not leaking.   Just glad its back together and running well.

Still waiting on the paint to be replaced though, but the dealer is working on it.

Mr. Magoo,

Not sure which of us your asking, but every one that has been into my local dealership has had to have the rockerboxes clearanced.   The Moco has paid for all of clearancing under warranty.   In my case I just wish they had clearanced them both the first time they repaired the head leak.

Picked mine up Saturday after having the rear head gasket replaced because of oil leak at oil return hole.  Hope it's fixed!  I'll find out next weekend.

Mine isn't dripping yet, but the rear gasket at the oil return hole looks wet, and when I clean it with a paper towel and screwdriver tip, I get a bit of oily dirt on the towel. Will talk to SM tomorrow. Looks like it will probably go in for repairs soon. I'll make sure to get the boxes addressed when it's in.
